I just joined. Saw your post about your son leaving on the 9/19 - that was the date my daughter left as well. I haven't heard from her yet - getting a bit frantic... She is on ship 11 - how about your son?
Our son also left 9/19 from Newport TN. Ship 2 Div 901. Haven't heard from him yet.
Since your Recruit is in a performing division, you may also want to join the Group, 900's division sailors. There will be information on there that relates to your situation. Here is a site I found that explains about 900 Divisions, The Requirements for the Navy RTC 900 Division
There are 3 types of 900 divisions. There are the Band/Bluejacket Choir/Drill team, otherwise known as Triple Threat (the musicians, singers, and drill team), the Sticks (those who carry the state flags), and the Ship Staff/Honor Guard (the body snatchers, those who guard various things...). Three 900 divisions perform their duties at each PIR, the 900 division(s) from that TG and if needed one to three 900 divisions from the next one or two TG's. Each 900 Division performs in their own PIR and in the PIR for one or two TGs ahead of their own. They may also have performances in the community--that happens mainly for the Triple Threat though. I believe that Division 901 is Ship Staff/Honor Guard.
Ship Staff is in charge on PIR day. They greet and welcome the Officers and their distinguished guests as Sideboys, they play the role of "Body Snatcher" walking up and down the rows of Sailors, watching for and sometimes catching any Sailor about to or going down. (They lock their knees sometimes and pass out). They help the Navy Corpsmen in the back room, they Guard doors and perform a myriad of tasks behind the scenes and in front. It is their job to help make sure all goes smoothly. The Honor Guard Drill Team (they're the ones with the yellow ascots) also does a rifle performance at the beginning of the ceremony.
Watch the RTC’s fB page beginning 2 weeks before your SR’s PIR and you may catch a glimpse of your SR if they post pics.

What Division is your SR in? The shp number are important to know where to send mail, but it is the division number that is important and will also help to define her once she is a Sailor. The division number stays with them throughout their Navy career.
I am new at all of this - feel kinda silly not knowing all the lingo. My daughter's letter said she is Ship 11 - Div - 005 - I don't know what that all means. Just starting to check out this site. Tomorrow will be three weeks - hoping that a letter comes really soon. If anyone has any tips - that would be great. The form letter said that graduation is set for 11/16 - how soon do you recommend making plans - and, is it safe to assume that we may at least get a day with her? Have no idea on how long we should stay - we'd be flying in so...
Join the group, PIR 11/16/2012 TG 01 – 9 Divisions (001-008 & 90), to connect with others with loved ones training with your SR. Know that Divisions 005 and 006 are brother divisions and train together and will have Battle Stations-21 together, so look for others with loved ones in either division. TG stands for Training Group (the group of Recruits that graduate on the same day). TG 01 will have Pass-in-Review (PIR) on 11/16/2012. They will be the TG that began training the first week of October when the Navy fiscal year began. There will be 9 divisions in TG 01, which is one of the smaller TG's lately.
A Division is approximately 88 recruits who live and train together. There can be as few as 55 to as many as 100 in a Division. Each Division, except the 800's and 900's Divisions, trains with a Brother Division. Your daughter's brother division is Division 006. She is most likely in an Integrated division, one that cotains males and females, since it is only rarely that the RTC has an all female division. The males of the brother divisions bunk together and the females of the two divisions bunk together. The Ship number identifies the building their barracks are in. Each building also has a name of a famous US ship, but few refer to them by the name. It's the Division number that is the most important - they will write that on their sailor hat and everything in their Seabag and it will be there forever, throughout their Navy career, but the ship number is important when you send them letters because it helps to get the letters to them. Ship 11 is the USS Kearsarge, but you don't need to include that on letters unless your SR includes it.
Start making plans now. Since you are flying, the longer you wait, the higher the prices will be. Southwest allows you to change flight plans without a fee and also allows 2 free bags per passenger. Some have indicated that flights into Milwaukee have been cheaper.
Sarge has a taxi service and he is a wealth of information and has a Meet and Greet at the Sundance Saloon in Waukegan the night before PIR. His cell number is 847-212-0246. His M&G and services have been getting great reviews. Sarge can be found on here as OldSarge (clickable link to find out more).
What will her rating (job) be? It is important to know that because the amount of time you have with her afer PIR will depend on where she goes for training or "A" School. Plan to arrive on Thursday and attend the PIR 11/16/2012 SARGE'S MEET AND GREET that evening and maybe part of the PIR 11/16/2012 Ramada Meet and Greet. If she stays at GL, plan to leave late Sunday or on Monday. If she flies out, plan to leave late Saturday or on Sunday.

Thanks for all the info - a lot to take in. You asked "What will her rating (job) be?" - where do I find this out? I know that she is supposed to be a CTN.
As Anti M said CTN will be her rating. CTN is Cryptologic Technician Networks. "A" School for CTN is in Corry Station, FL at the Center for Information Dominance (CID). She will fly out, so plan to leave late Saturday or on Sunday since she will most likely fly out on Saturday. You will be able to meet her at the airport and give her her cell phone and other things to put in her black backpack.
