OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

A question about PIR November 21 (My very first post)
Hi, All! I will start by saying that this site has helped my family so much through this process. I have been lurking for a looonngg time. (Over a year)
My son is in BC right now. I got his form letter saying he is in ship 12 division 016. (What does the division mean?) He is to go to A school in Pensacola FL after PIR.
His letter also said PUR was November 23. But I have read here that it is really the 21st.
So my question is will the recruits get to spend Thanksgiving day with their family? If they have PIR on Wednesday, would they fly out on a holiday?
My son also told me that someone at MEPS said that if they have PIR on Wednesday that they may be able to come home for Thanksgiving weekend. (Keep in mind that he hadn't shipped out yet when he heard this and it was just other recruits talking)
So- any information you might have about PIR during Thanksgiving holiday would be great. I am really unsure about how to long to stay.
Also- where to eat Thanksgiving dinner in the area?

Yes, the form letter is WRONG. PIR is Wednesday, 21 November. See http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/upcoming_grads.asp. I see you have joined the group, PIR 11/21/2012 TG 02 – 11 Divisions (009-018 & 902). There will be a lot of good information and support in the group.
A Division is approximately 88 recruits who live and train together. There can be as few as 55 to as many as 100 in a Division. Their Division number is important, for lots of reasons, but it will ALWAYS define them. They write that number on their cover (sailor hat, aka dixie cup or lid) and that always stays with them, well after boot camp is over! Each Division, except the 800's and 900's Divisions, trains with a Brother Division. Divisions 015 and 016 are brother divisions and train together and will have Battle Stations-21 together, so look for others with loved ones in either division.
On the day of PIR, your Sailor will have Liberty from about 10:30 when Liberty is called until sometime in the evening (usually around 8 to 9 pm) and he will need to be back at the RTC about a half hour before Liberty expires to be certain to get back to the ship on time. He MAY have daytime Liberty for Thanksgiving and fly out on Friday due to flight availability issues for the holiday. This has happened in the past, but I haven't seen anything official on this yet. No, he cannot go home for Thanksgiving unless home is within 50 miles of the RTC.
Only your Sailor will know his flight arrangements for certain. He will let you know what airport he will fly out of and when so you can meet him at the airport and spend time with him before his flight and give him his cell phone, laptop, and other things that will fit in his black backpack. Plan to arrive at GL on Tuesday and go to Sarge's Meet and Greet that evening and plan to leave Late Friday or on Saturday to give you the most time with your Sailor.
Here are two of the Pensacola groups, Sailors In Pensacola, FL For A School....Corry Station too!! and Parents of A School Sailors in Pensacola. What will his rating (job) be? There may be other groups I can steer you to.

There will be information within your PIR group on places that will be open on Thanksgiving Day. (You may want to ask for it.)

hi, that is great information for me as well. but i would like to know for sure before i book my flight if he will have liberty on thanksgiving day, because if he is not, then i will just plan to fly back on that day instead of paying to stay longer (since there will be four of us) so will we know this soon?

Since he is staying in GL, plan to arrive on Tuesday and you can fly out as late as late Sunday or on Monday since he WILL have daytime Liberty every day of the 4-day weekend. You have to decide what works best for your situation.

Thank you for this info. I have been struggling with when to book my flight back home. My son also said he will be going to A school in Florida. I don't know whether to fly back home Friday or stay until Sunday. UGHHHH...

Since he flies out, plan to leave late Friday or on Saturday.
What is his rating (job) going to be?
Also, please check out the groups I mentioned above and join those that fit your needs. There will be lots of information and support in those groups as well as in your PIR group.

I don't really know his rating or job class. He told me he would be doing logistics. I'm new to the military stuff. Wish I knew more. He wasn't supposed to leave for BC until December and they called out of the blue and asked him if he could leave next week (9/26). It was all very fast and sudden.

His rating may be Logistics Specialist (LS). LS "A" School is in Meridian, MS at Naval Air Station Meridian. You may want to double-check his rating and if that is correct, join Logistic Specialists, Sailors attending A School in Meridian, Mississippi, and/or Meridian Mississippi A School family&friends. Lemonelephant thank you so much for this information. I remember seeing a sheet like this in his room. I just checked it and it said Logistics Specialist- Submarines. And the paper does say A school in Meridian, MS.

Thanks SO much for the info!! I appreciate the time you took.
One more thing that I just thought of. On the form letter where there are spaces for names attending PIR- instead of names my son wrote: Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister. Is this going to be a problem?

Lots of SR's do that to save time when filling out the form letter--that info is just for you. He will submit the actual names about a week or so before PIR.
