My son is due (or may already be) on a mine sweeper in Bahrain. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

My son has been on a minesweeper for 9 months now. It has been really difficult for me and now I am really upset about the homecoming. I have been told not to be there in San Diego when he arrives and that I am not welcome for the first few weeks.....:( I have a really great daughter in law and love her so much but this is very hard for me! I have been there for all of the important things in my son's life and it really hurts to be excluded. I have read all of the articles related to this topic but it just seems that the mom's are the ones who have to sacrifice. I just want to see him and hug him and know with my own eyes that he is okay....I even suggested to him that I fly to DC where he will have a layover and meet him in the airport for lunch/dinner...whatever......( I live in Florida ). My son and I are close so when he said I was being silly about this it HURT!!! I guess I just need to suck it up and hope that they at least call me when he arrives. I am sure there are more experienced Navy Mom's out there who have some much needed advice for me......

I'm so sorry that your son & DIL are doing this, but it is understandable.  They are young and selfish at this age, as most young people are - I remember being this way when my hubby and I were young marrieds.

I'm guessing they don't have children yet, so therefore they cannot relate to a mother's love & need to see her son.  It's OK to be unhappy about it - cry & vent away!  We are here for you!  But you're right about having to suck it up.  :P   We do have to let go, bit by bit.  It's so hard!  I remember how hard to it was to go from #1 to # 2 lady in my son's life when he got married and it's not fun.  But for me, it's been almost 5 years since he married and it does get better, I promise.

I think you might try to ask again about meeting him in DC or in SD when he actually comes home.  It's not like you're asking to spend night & day with him for weeks on end.  Explain to him how much of a difference it makes to ANY Navy mom to see her son in person.  If he still balks, then let it go and move on.  It is his wife's time with her husband and we can understand that.  Hugs to you.

Take care

I know what you mean . My son does not have a significant other, but I feel like an outcast when I check the ships Facebook site. Then I realize how young these wives are and I'm glad my boy doesn't have the added pressure of having a wife or kids
FB site? Is it by ship name? How do I go about finding such a thing?

Many ships & crews have official pages on Facebook; just put the name into the search feature on FB. It really helps to have that to check out, esp. when they are deployed or stationed afar.  Hope it works!

My son just got Junior Sailor of the Quarter!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw the list on FB.  Congratulations!!!

I joined this group yesterday.  My son is on the USS Curts FFG38.  Their home port is San Diego they are currently deployed.  His ship is being decomishined in January 2013.  He has his new orders which is a mine sweeper & still will be stationed in San Diego.  From what I undersstand he will come home for a week after his deployment and then fly back to San Diego from there he will fly to Bahrain to meet up with his crew.  So maybe he will be with one of your sons.  I am hoping he runs into some friends from BC & A school that he knows are stationed there.

I am in Ohio.

Welcome, Denise!  Keep us up to date as to which crew he gets assigned to.  Enjoy his visit home!

If any of you minesweeper folks are interested, I added this thread to the ships site. We are small, but important nonetheless

Hopefully, you will join in.

My son also left from SD on June 15th.  He won't be back until sometime in March.
