OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Meeting your loved one at the airport after PIR
There are a few things I learned when my son went through PIR.
1. Do not expect to meet them immediately after the graduation, we waited at the NEX station on base for 4 hrs.
2. If your loved one is flying out that weekend and you plan on meeting them there to see them off or hand over the bag of items you brought from home for them to take with them to school, you have a meeting place. My thought would be to tell them to meet you at the USO office. This is actually where several kids wait until its time to board their flight. Its right above the Delta counter. The USO will even assist you to get a pass to go with your loved one to the gate to wait with him/her until time to board - no matter the age.
The USO office is awesome, they are much more understanding and will assist you in whatever you may need to make this a pleasurable experience.

AMEN leannevalle about waiting after PIR. We were at the NEX and frantic when another sailor in my son's division told my dad my son got stuck with an unscheduled watch. He was on the first flight out too so we didn't get much time with him. We're going to Goose Creek for Thanksgiving so hope to see him more. Good luck!

We had such a great experience with the USO that I now volunteer at Liberty USO in Philly airport. It is z fantastic organization!
As our son was boarding the flight for a school, the passengers and people st the gate gave them s standing ovation. It was very moving and quite a thrill. Not to be missed!! -

I have a question, I've heard what you can give to the SR when the fly off to school. The black bookbag, do they have that or is that a bag we would buy them??

I actually purchased one from the NEX mall located in Great Lakes. However, at the airport, there is noone there telling you what type of bag he/she can or cannot have.....You just want to make it managable for them to carry as they have quite a few bags they have to lug around by themselves. I gave my son a backpack. I put cell phones, games, clothes, jacket. I wish I had packed his Passport as this helps them have more liberty at school for some reason. Should have packed his wallet too. Hope this helps.

Should I bring her travel suitcase filled with her stuff ? I was wondering how they get their clothes etc. it is allowed then ?

The SR's know to meet you at the NEX, I would get there early to sit on the bottom bleachers in the front/center. Tell you SR however to stay where is directly after the PIR ceremony and you will walk to him/her. I never found my son as he went looking for me as I looking for him, they only give you 10 minutes to see each other prior to clearing the auditorium - they go back to their barracks/ships and family goes to NEX and waits.

leannevalle - Thank you for posting. I am a veteran mom on the PIR groups and we like to make sure the info we pass along is correct and up to date. So we ask for help whenever we can as our Sailors PIR'd months to a few years ago! Coupla questions...
If I understand correctly your son was not attending A school at Great Lakes up the street?
He was flying out the next day?
Do you know if ALL the Sailors that were at RTC had to wait for four hours?
Usually, what we hear about is that most that are departing RTC for A schools other than GL are allowed to depart for Liberty right after the ceremony ( mine did, but that was a year and a half ago.) The exceptions have always been those that have watch right after.
The Sailors that are attending GL TSC (Great Lakes Training Support Center)for A school only have a short time right after PIR with their families and then have to return to their barracks, gather their things, board a bus and go up the road to check in at TSC. This does take about 3-5 hours so make sure your Sailor still has a working calling card as they may not have their cell phone until after they INDOC at TSC GL. Or you can go over to TSC and wait there for them. There is a Visitors Centre and a Museum. See this link: RTC Website Graduation Schedule/Sailor Departure/Liberty and Museum...
There can be variations to when your Sailor is released for Liberty. You won't know until you see them that day.
USO
I believe the USO you are talking about is the one for O'Hare airport.
The USO at O'Hare is located OUTSIDE of the secured area in Terminal 2 above the Delta Airlines Ticket counter - so anyone can access it. The USO at Midway Airport is located INSIDE of the secured area in Concourse C - you must have a boarding pass or courtesy pass to get beyond TSA security area. Both USO's are open 24/7.

♥FireTeamLeaderWife♥ aka FTLW You are correct in stating that my son did not stay in GL for A School. He was taken to Ohare airport at 2:30am to catch a 7:05am flight....along with several other SR's. I was with about 20 other families that had to wait as well after PIR, for more reasons than one. Even if your sailor thinks and tells you he will see you in 30 mins, that is not always the case. This kind of information is helpful to those loved ones(like myself) not get so panicked when 1hr, 2hr, 3hr, 4hr goes by.....
