NavyFamilyOf3 - Assuming your son has already arrived and contacted you, then he should already be at the base.  If he is JUST getting there - and if flying into Narita airport - then he would follow directions to bus that goes directly to Yokosuka (oh....is that right? ;-0)  anyway - the way it works in Yokosuka (my son is on Geo. Washington carrier and is currently out) - he will be assigned to what they call The Barge.  He will stay there until the ship pulls in (soonish) or until he is finished w/ INDOC. INDOC is a variety of teachings about Japan, it's culture, the base, how to behave, where to go, what to do about a phone, etc. etc.  He will be taken on a tour off base and taught how to use the trains, etc. etc.  When the ship pulls in (whichever one he might be on), he'll then be sent there.  Not sure about the food tasting "different" - I visited Japan last year and I thought EVERYTHING was different! ;-0  My son and most others enjoy trying new things and going sight-seeing when they can get off the ship.  He won't go hungry, that's for sure.  At Yokosuka base (again assuming that's where your son is going) they have a Chili's on base and a couple of other eating places w/ "western" food.  Off base is where the adventure is.  Hope this helps.

He will go through a cultural introductory course, usually lasts three days.

The food on base is pretty much American food.  The Japanese use more soy sauce than salt, and they do use less sugar in baking and so on.  So yes and no... depends on what and where he is eating.  McDonalds and the other fast food joints are the same all over the globe (pretty much).  But who wants to eat the same stuff they can have in the US?   Japanese food is wonderful, he should just dive in to the many wonderful places to eat offbase.  If he doesn't like it, try something else.

Thank u ladies,Kat an Anti M, that is helpful info. more then we knew, up to now. he landed Narita airport 445 his time, 1245 our time, Kat, We have Not heard from him up to now  an he IS going to Yokosuka, Japan. wasnt sure if could say name of ship, dont know cencurship in effect, old school..he be on USS Fitzgerald-DDG62   As for the food, i dont think thats a problem, his 1st choice has always been Japan to learn the culture an language. To him, " Its An Adventure an im on my way".. he took marshel arts when younger an wants to do it there to..(i told him their going to kick his but over there). whats the Barge? The docking base? (home port) Im glad to hear about the 3 day Indoc/cultural course, cause im concerned about the tention over the rape case over there,my wife worried about Mt Fugi. I was on boomer subs in Glasgow, Scotland.in the 70s.

There are martial arts classes held on base. In fact, my old neighbors from when I lived there, Mr. Hattori and his wife Kazuko, teach Akido. I tutored their kids in English, we'd have potlucks every week!

Why does Mt. Fuji bother you?  Sure, it is a volcano, but it has been dormant for a very long time.  I climbed it twice, very easy trail up, well marked, thousands of people do it, including grannies!

The tension over the rape is mostly in Okinawa.  It happens periodically, and things will ease off eventually.

The Barge is basically a floating barracks, tied to a pier. "Home port" refers to where the ship calls home, in your sailor's case Yokosuka Base as a whole is his home port.

hi anti m..we saw on the news here, its not dorment any longer,lol.. i told my wife if thats the case an does decide to go, the ship an base will move, long before, haha i would hope...maybe my son can trade language for lessons..his new wife of 2 days, as when he left, was told maybe she could teach english also so she could move over there, to be there for him..But we understand that he has to be an E4 or above, is that so? first she didnt want to at all, didnt think it safe, now from him being home 11 days an getting married 2 days before he left, (an she took it hard), now she has 2nd thoughts, and may want to go...

Hello What ship is your son going to? Mine is on the USS John McCain. He will be there a year Christmas week. When he got there he got right to work. He got a tour of the base and ship. Then he was pretty much put right to work. It's been a super busy work year for him. They are out right now but think they will be in around Thanksgiving? He had a iphone but only uses it to facebook with us. He has no phone service to us. I have not ever called him since he left which is kinda strange. He usually calls from a pay phone with a card he buys about once a month. At first he called every few days. To tell us everything. Now he still keeps pretty good communication but it's cheaper to do on fb. oh yeah my son also left right after a school so he only had his uniforms and one other civilian outfit. Once he was there a month he asked us to send him some extra cloths just a few things. The rest he has purchased there. The base is pretty big and there is a lot to do at first so he will stay busy. I hope he adjusts well. Mine did, a little homesick at times but not bad. Let me know if you have any other questions maybe I can answer them for you.
Good Luck! Thinking of you and your son during this change in your lives.

Hi Daisy, USS Fitzgerald DDG 62..his orders say he will be there for 3 plus yrs... i thought it was yr by yr, unless at war..his ship is out now also,so he supposed to bee= on base, now what i see on this group he may be on The Barge,IDK..he was also told he wont get to be on the ship for 2 or 3 months cause he has a lot of learning an training, he wants to get a phone (couldnt take his, not globle) but i think the calls will be to exspensive, internet/skype be better. he took afew civies with him. he had a extra dufflel bag he had before enlisting, he took less then what he came home on leave with,lol..he came with a duffel an large suit case, 60lbs each an a packed back pack..left with 2 duffels 63lbs total an the back pack that was less...

What does my new duaghter in law do now that her husband ( my son) is in japan,

benefits?

Basing house allow- will THEY get it even if she dosnt live on base???

what are the steps for the new wedded wife to do????

Most of the financial steps must be done by the sailor, not the dependent.

He needs to make sure she is on all his paperwork.  She will get her BAH as designated by the zip code where she lives even if she does not live on base. They'll also get Family Separation Pay.  She is supposed to get a slice of his base pay too.  He needs to get her banking info to send money to her via direct deposit.  They need to decide if they need two accounts, one for him to use without worrying if he's spending her rent and food money, and one for her to use and not leave him without spending money.  I suggest it, as long distance budgeting for two can be difficult.

Does she have her ID card already?  She can do that without him, as long as he sends the proper signed form.  That will act as her health insurance card with Tricare.

Aunti M-

this is the wife talking, hi, lol

No i do not have a military card ID, but i do have drivers lic.

I know  my husband was supposed to take my birth cirt, but i we couldnt find it since we moved  a couple times this year so ill be getting a new one sent to me so i can send a copy to him so he can do something with it.  i will let my husband know what he needs to do but im pretty sure he knows what to do. We have a JOINT account and we both keep track of our spending very carefully on-line, so we both know how much needs to be saved, etc,

just so i understand what your talking about, what are the forms and what do i need to do?

i already went to ssi to change my name, 2mrrow ill do my drive lic, then ill do the bank to change my lastname. after i get my new drivers lic, i think i still have to change the bills lastname and my trucks title to my new lastname.,.... im learning slowly but pretty please fill me in, my email, is lilfriz33@gmail.com so i can repsond to you on here or via.

thanks for helping.

Okay, you are handling the civilian side very well.  I am talking about what he must do to get your military benefits.  You can't do it until he has completed his part.  He must add you to his page two (part of his service record) and enroll you in DEERS (how the military keeps track of dependents).  He will need the marriage license, and yes, your certified birth certificate, for that, and probably certified copies of your ID card and SSN card.  When he gets to Japan he must ask how to get this all done, as soon as he can.  He cannot get anything done for you until the Navy knows you exist on paper, in their system.

Once he gets to on his record and in DEERS, he enrolls you in Tricare for your insurance.  He will fill out a form and send it to you (DD1172) for your ID card.  You can take it to the nearest military facility to get your ID card (DD1173).  Does not need to be Navy, I can show you how to find the closest place.  You MUST have that card!!!  It is your lifeline to all your benefits.  He needs to put in for your housing allowance, BAH.  It takes a few pay cycles to kick in, but will be effective from the date you married.  He must ask at personnel what he needs to get done.

He should also sign your up with the ombudsman, the trained volunteer spouse from the ship who keeps the families in the loop.  You can google his ship and find her (it almost always is a her).  She will help you a great deal, even if it is long distance.

That is a start, so I hope that helps.  I posted it here so anyone else with similar questions can see it and ask too.

And get him to give you a power of attorney.  He can get one done free at legal on his ship or on base.  It will help if you run into problems getting your ID, etc.

And get a passport, just in case.  Handy if an emergency comes up, or unexpected good luck in traveling arrangements.

Here's how you can figure out how much BAH you will receive (eventually...) Use your zip code, not his FPO.  Because he is overseas, you will get it for where you live, not where he is stationed as usual.
