BAHRAIN MINESWEEPER COMMUNITY - Thanksgiving Phone Call Update

We heard from DS on Thanksgiving day at 1:30 am CT.  From a deep sleep, I hear my cell phone ringing, I grab for it and I don't recognize the number.  With four grown kids, aging parents, and a son in Bahrain, I always fear the worst when the phone rings so late at night.  Well, what a great Thanksgiving treat it was to hear that familiar "Hey Mom!"  It was the first time that we spoke on the phone since he deployed nearly a month ago.

Since many of us Minesweeper Moms are hungry for info, here are a few general comments that may be of interest.

iPad: He carries his new iPad with him in his backpack and uses it everyday.  He downloaded several books which he enjoys reading (only a few pages a day since he's so busy). He can check his bank balance, Facebook, and email, etc.

Working out:  This was an area of concern before deployment since he's an exercise fanatic.  He says no issue on this front as the base has a decent gym where he works out daily and there are pick up soccer and basketball games that he enjoys.

Thanksgiving meal:  He said that there was an offering of a traditional Thanksgiving meal and $1 beer in huge tents! Although for him, since he was on watch that day, he wouldn't be able to go. Bummer.

Cooking in the Flat:  He cooks one meal a day in his flat.  Since everything is very expensive over there (and he mentioned that produce doesn't last more than a day), he was anxious for things to cook.  He eats two meals a day on his ship and he was raving out the ships cook who is very health conscious and always has a great salad bar with grilled chicken.

Requested items for care package:  "Send any food" "Send blanket" "forgot my iPod, please send another."  Okay, in a nutshell that's what he kindly asked for.  I am looking for recommendations on what to send since he's not a sweet or dairy eater, I am thinking beef jerky, pasta, brown rice, dry soup fixings, qunioa, etc.  Whole Foods has a  vaccuum packed pouch of marinara sauce, what do you think?  Would it explode (like someone's can of sardines in an earlier post)?  I thought maybe sending a rice cooker or crock pot so that when he's off duty he'd have food ready to eat.

Blanket?: I have set up the weather and time in Bahrain on my iPad which I look at frequently during the day...it helps me feel closer to him.  However, in checking the temperature, I see that it's very hot still, but oddly enough he's asked that we send a blanket.

So, our first are packages will be in two parts: a "food box" (dry grains, canned goods, measuring cup, beef jerky, etc.)  and a "comfort box" (ipod, itunes card, blanket, TEXANS sweatshirt, rice cooker, etc.)

IDEA for Bahrain Moms Group:  Wouldn't it be great if we could put our experiences and ideas together and come up with a "what works" food and  comfort care package list?  Also, is using the US Postal Service "flat rate" box the best way to send?

GRATITUDE:  It sure helps as I am a new mom to having a child deployed.  This is our youngest son and it has been a very difficult road to journey on having him in this hot bed part of the world, so hard to communicate, and knowing that he's away at least until the summer.  Our communciation would best be described as a near crawl versus the near daily texts/calls/emails from before deployment.  When I say that he is the light of my life...I think that you can relate..and when you have that energy force pulled away...well, it brings tears to my eyes just typing this.  I have faith that I'll adapt, and am  grateful beyond words for God's presence and comfort in my life.  Thank each of you for your child's commitment to our country and for the sacrifices made to defend our freedom and protect us.

Have a great week...and I look forward to hearing from you on ideas for packages.

My son is currently in San Diego, but his ship is in Bahrain and I guess he'll be headed over there soon. Just finishing up C School in a few weeks..

Great info Houston Mom! Thanks. I forwarded your post to my son.

I'd suggest we find a place to set up an MCM board on here, and you move your post to it.
