Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Totally new to NavyforMoms
I'm a brand new Navy Mom and this is my first post ~ actually question.
Our son got a swearing in date of 6 Dec 2012.
Then he was told there was a group being sworn in 13 Dec 2012 and he was to be sworn in then.
Then he was told that they were shutting down the recruiting office until after the holidays and it would be some time after the first of the year.
Is this a normal experience? Thanks!

that sounds a little strange, because he wouldn't get sworn in at the recuiters office he would have to go to MEPS for that.
not sure what they are referring to, I think they do a little swearing in but it's not the real thing until they are at MEPS.

BR549, NikiB is not indicating that the future Sailor was to be sworn in at the recruiter's office. She is referring to the following:
Commander, Navy Recruiting Command (COMNAVCRUITCOM) has authorized a holiday leave period for recruiting activities beginning on close of business 18 December 2012 through 7 January 2013. In conjunction with this period, Recruit Training Command will not receive any recruits during the period from 14 December through 31 December 2012.

A ship date for her recruit of 13 December would have resulted in her future Sailor arriving at MEPS and/or the RTC on 14 Dec. and that is not possible with the holiday leave period. The TG for many of those arriving last week is the 02/01/2013 TG and that TG is a large one with at least 13 divisions (maybe 14 divisions), so some future Sailors' ship dates were changed away from last week.

Yes, what you have mentioned has happened for others recently. They also moved some recruits up who had originally had shipping dates within the timeframe when the recruiting offices are to be shut down for the holidays and no recruits will arrive at the RTC.
Join the group, DEP-Leavin' for Boot Camp in January. You will meet others with loved ones leaving around the same time who may be in the same TG and have PIR together. Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for the RTC. I also suggest you join New Members Stop Here and Boot Camp Moms and check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) and Discussions there.
Your future Sailor may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer you to some good links on there.

Hi, I am also new to Navy moms, my son was just sworn in yesterday in Boston MA. I was very glad that I got it on tape because I watch it when I miss him. It was very odd because he called last night, and we thought he was going to chicago but when he called the phone said south carolina, which is where he will be going to nuc school after bc. I believe the phone was of someones from sc. Yes it is normal that nothing happens for the next wk or so.

It is possible that your son borrowed a cell phone from another recruit to make that last call and that is why it came from an SC number. I know my son loaned his phone to another recruit to make the call. The Navy's only boot camp is located at the Recruit Training Command (RTC) in Great Lakes, IL.

You may want to join, or at least check out, Boot Camp Moms, PIR Reference Information, and New Members Stop Here. Once you know your SR’s PIR date and/or division number, watch in Boot Camp Moms and/or at http://www.navyformoms.com/forum/topics/groups-listed-by-pir-date and join the group for that once it has been created. There will be a lot of great information and support for you in those groups as well as in the PIR group. Be sure to check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) and Discussions within the groups.
You may also want to join DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in December to connect with others with loved ones who left yesterday or this week and may have PIR with your SR.
I see you have joined NUKE moms; you may also want to join, or at least check out, Loved Ones in the Nuke Program! and Nuke School Charleston sometime between now and the end of BC.
