My daughter is leaving for an IA to Djibouti, Africa very shortly. She would like to talk to others that have been there to kind of get an idea of what to expect, especially other females that have been there. She will be there for a year and she's an IT. Anyone have any advice or info?

feel free to message me, my husband was IA there.  that is the safest place to go IA :)

Thank you! I'm so glad to hear it's somewhat safe.   She's a little worried about what she's walking in to over there and what she'll be doing.  She's stationed in San Diego now, but will be leaving for the IA training in North Carolina in a few days.  How long was your husband there?

He was over there for 9 months..actually he had fun there. For his birthday, he went out  with the Marines, or someone..and they let him throw a live grenade..when he got a 96 (four day pass) him and some of the other guys went to some hotel there...omg when I saw the pictures, I was jealous.  Also he went to a cheetah place...where there where the big cats and all..

Only thing he didn't care for was everything was bottled water, even brushing their teeth.  Start buying those little packets that you put in water to change the flavor, my husband loved those.

Is she over 21?  Asking as they had a beer tent, where they can have so many beers a month...that was funny to me

Yeah, she's 27, so she'll be glad to hear about the beer tent.   Great information, thanks again, she'll be glad to know that the year might go by a little faster than she thinks.   Are there other things that you sent to your husband that he needed while he was there?  Did he have a cell phone while he was there, she is going to take her laptop and I guess she's heard that wifi is pretty easy to hook up to, for Skype.

He didn't have a cell phone while there but he did take my lap top and we talked via that way.  I sent him stupid stuff from the $1 store, he PT'ed a lot while there and he was really skinny when he got home he had to put some weight back on.

They had a little store there to buy things he needed.

Maybe she should get one of those amazing filter straws... camping places sell them.  Filter out darn near everything, although they can't replace true purification.  Just handy to have in a pinch, or as a novelty.

I'm thinking a feminine needs kit/stock up ... because the military never seems to carry the right products/preferred brands or types.  She may want to google "diva cup" and see if that's any interest.

oh yes...that diva cup would have come in handy when I was with the Seabee's!  YES She needs a "diva cup"!!!

and if she is picky about her feminine products, take a bunch of those!  I didn't think about that as I am not picky, pads, tampons...what ever works for me

I was never picky either, but there are days when you want what you like when you want it!
