My son is leaving for boot camp earlier than expected...in one week!!!

My son was due to leave for boot camp in September but received a call from his recruiter saying they had an earlier opening, but he would have to leave in one week, April 10, 2013!  I know this time would come, but I thought I still had 5 more months not 1 week!!!  Anyone else have a recruit that will be leaving on April 10th?  Also, anyone have any advice for me or my son?  Thanks, Deb

Hey Deb! The same thing happened to us just last week. My son was scheduled to leave for boot camp June 12th but received a call last Tues stating there was an opening and that he had to leave in 24 hours! It just happened to be my husbands birthday so our dinner reservations turned into a going away dinner for our son since we had to drop him off at the hotel and say our goodbyes at ten o'clock that night! It was horrible. I cried at dinner and when we dropped him off at the hotel I didn't want to let him go. He's my only child and even though I knew he was leaving eventually I didn't think it would be so soon and unexpected. Take advantage of the fact that you have a few days to spend with him before he leaves. Enjoy your time with him and be strong. He's going to be ok and he's going to make you so proud!

Hey Shante'...Oh my goodness...here I am feeling sad because I  have 1 week to spend with my son and all you had was one day!  At least your son got to celebrate his dad's birthday before he lest!  I guess whenever the time comes that our babies have to leave us, is never a good time!  I really thank you for all you advice.  I am just hoping that these last few days go very slowly.  I hope we can stay in touch.

Debbie

My son will be leaving from Memphis, TN on April 10.  We also just found out today.

Hello cthomas!  Wow...my son is coming from Baltimore, MD.  When was your son originally scheduled to leave?

He has not known when he would leave.  He tested for a different job, and some paperwork did not get processed properly, so he has been waiting to hear something.  His original date was April, but was told it would  change.

I see you have joined Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones); join the group, DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in April, to connect with others with loved ones who will leave the same day and may have PIR together. (Be sure to check out the Pages--found under the pictures--within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones).)  Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for....

Your future Sailor may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer him to some good links on there.

Thank you so much lemonelephant!!!

You are very welcome.

Hi Deb,  My son leaves tomorrow for MEPS in Sacramento and flies out for bootcamp on Weds. April 10.  We've know since last October his ship date. I've had all this time to prepare and I'm still amazed that the day is already here for him to leave. I wish you and your family well and the best of luck to your son.

The info in my reply above also applies to you. I look forward to sharing this journey with you.

Thank you lemonelephant. I'm sure I will need all the help I can get, the information is very much appreciated.

You are very welcome.
