Anyone hear that that there are new tatoo regs when joining ? My son was ready to go, recruiter called him today just to come in for a minute. He got there, was handed a v neck t-shirt to put on & was told he was disqualified because of his tatoos. He had been told previously that there were no concerns with them. Recruiter said new regs came out last week & that anyone who was pending boot that had tats visible in a v-neck would be disqualified. This has been heartbreaking for my son. He already spent $800 to have his ear piercings closed with a plastic surgeon.... absolutely sucks :(

Where are his tattoo's, and what are they of? He can ask for a waiver...though I have heard right now it is hard to get a waiver.
Top/back of both arms - Hakuna Matata, R shoulder back - Angel w/ Family, L shoulder back - angel with sword. R forearm - Celtic cross. I could kill him - we have yelled about tatoos since the 1st one ! $800 to repair the ear piercings (his own money). So sucks - there isn't sh*t for these kids out here. Assoc. degree worth nothing but school loans. Working in Walmart - 21 yrs old. We were so hoping this would be the thing to get him moving towards adulthood ...
Sorry to say, he should have thought about that before got all those tattoo's Even if he goes and pays to have them removed..there is no telling if he would qualify to join. He can go check out the other branches as they may have different regulations than the Navy. Children don't realize the consequences of their actions until it is too late.
He can request a waiver and try to join if he wants, key word try
Below is what the current reg's are
7. TATTOOS/BODY ART/BRANDS. Four Criteria will be used to determine whether tattoos/body art/brands are permitted for Navy personnel: content, location, size and cosmetic.
a. Content. Tattoos/body art/brands located anywhere on the body that are prejudicial to good order, discipline, and morale or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the naval service are prohibited. For example, tattoos/body art/brands that are obscene, sexually explicit, and or advocate discrimination based on sex, race, religion, ethnic, or national origin are prohibited. In addition, tattoos/body art/brands that symbolize affiliation with gangs, supremacist or extremist groups, or advocate illegal drug use are prohibited.
b. Location. No tattoos/body art/brands on the head, face, neck, or scalp. The neck area for purposes of this regulation is any portion visible when wearing a crew neck T-shirt or open collar uniform shirt. In addition, otherwise permissible tattoos/body art/brands on the torso area of the body shall not be visible through white uniform clothing.
c. Size. Individual tattoos/body art/brands exposed by wearing a short sleeve uniform shirt shall be no larger in size than the wearer’s hand with fingers extended and joined with the thumb touching the base of the index finger. Tattoos/body art/brands that exceed size criteria are waiverable provided they do not violate the content and/or location criteria.
d. Cosmetic. This regulation does not prohibit cosmetic tattooing to correct medical conditions requiring such treatment. For the purpose of this regulation, cosmetic tattooing refers to medical or surgical procedures conducted by licensed, qualified medical personnel.
Four Criteria will be used to determine whether tattoos/body art/brands are permitted for Navy personnel: content, location, size and cosmetic.

I bet this all came about with the massive change in uniform standards that happened April 1st.
Just guessing, but I think the recruiters are confusing "Elliptical" undershirts for "V" neck... Elliptical are "Crew-neck".
Go read the new rules here:
http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/messages/Documents/...
Read para 6F, which says:
F. UNDERSHIRTS. UNDERSHIRTS SHALL BE NAVY BLUE, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT COTTON, QUARTER- LENGTH SLEEVE, WITH AN ELLIPTICAL (CREW-NECK) COLLAR. ORGANIZATIONALLY ISSUED OR PERSONALLY PURCHASED THERMAL UNDERWEAR IS AUTHORIZED TO BE WORN UNDERNEATH THE NWU TYPE I BLUE UNDERSHIRT AND TROUSERS.
I suspect it has more to do with the size and location of his tattoos and that the Navy is giving fewer waivers lately than in the past, but you may be correct. A V-neck T-shirt would cover pretty much the same area that would be covered by an open collar uniform shirt.
I would try to talk to the recruiter, Navy doesnt wear V neck tshirts under any of their uniforms, he may have read it wrong.
Thank you all - I will try to get him to call the recruiter this am - right now he is so pissed off I doubt he can hear me. I refuse to make the call for him - last thing he needs is his Mom fighting his battles. I appreciate the support :)
Please cross your fingers - his recruiter called him this am & told him he used the wrong shirt.... He is headed there now to be seen in a crew....These darn tats are going to be the death of me... He already had a waiver for them once, hopefully they will stick to it
He's IN !!!!!!! Ship date Oct 8 - what a ride it's been . We meet with his recruiter on Friday to discuss DEP & what happens next. Big deep breaths, tears and so much pride. He's on cloud 9, me about cloud 1. I'll get there, I'm sure. Alot of adjustment to my boy being a man in the Navy - whew ! Tatoos and all, he even got the E-3 and the job he wanted :)
That is good news. You may wish to join the group, Leavin' for bootcamp in October or October Boot Camp Family. You will meet others with loved ones leaving that day/week who may be in the same TG and have PIR together. Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for the RTC. I also suggest you join Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and New Members Stop Here and check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) and Discussions there.
Your future Sailor may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer him to some good links on there.
