Visiting with your sailor at the Midway airport before they leave for A School

I read somewhere earlier on Navyformoms that you can visit with your sailor at the airport.  I read that the bus from RTC drops them off at door 1, which is the left side of the terminal when facing from the front!  Looking at the map of the airport, there is no clear clue of a door or which side is left or right.  Can anyone be more specific like if its near concourse A, B, C? My sailor will arrive 7ish and depart 1ish.  I want to visit more with him, can anyone help with this information???????

You will need to go to with your Sailor to the airline counter to get a courtesy/guest/gate passes (sometimes called a companion pass). I know the USO is behind the security in Concourse C, so you have to have the pass before going there. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend.

I'm sorry I can't help you more than that.

On a different, bu related note, wherewill your Sailor be going to "A" School and/or what will his rating (job/specialty) be? There are groups for most of the "A" Schools and/or ratings.

Pensacola, aviation and I'm not sure about the rating.  Does that sound about right?  I was hoping to get more info from him at the airport because it will just be he and I and I can write stuff down.    Thank you so much for responding so quickly to my question.  Very, very informative.

So if he is due to arrive from RTC at midway at 6am, I should be there at 5:30am or earlier. Am I correct to think that I will wait for him to arrive near security in Concourse C so that I can walk with him to get the pass?

Yes, most arrive around 30 minutes before the Sailors are expected. I think you would do best to be near the ticket counter, but I'm not sure, and I have found mention of meeting near security. I'm looking to see what others have said and so far I keep getting that people were waiting when the bus arrived and met the Sailors or the Sailor called using a calling card and let them know where to meet, but no place was mentioned and they went to the ticket counter.  ***It looks like many met around security and went from there.

Since he is going to Pensacola; here are two of the Pensacola groups, Sailors In Pensacola, FL For A School....Corry Station too!! and Parents of A School Sailors in Pensacola. Once you know the rating, there may be one or more other groups I can send you to.

You are so awesome!  Well, I will get there at 5am to be safe and ask someone at one of the information desks if they could tell me where the military buses generally drop off.  I will tell them he is flying to Pensacola and hopefully someone can direct me in the right way and where to obtain the gate pass. I have checked the TSA website and it says that I should check with the airline to receive it and when I check Midway's website, it says I should check with TSA.  I appreciate your help so much.  I fly home late tomorrow evening back to Menifee, California.  Although I loved seeing my son today, it was too short and as a mom, I didn't get all my questions asked nor answered because there was just so much going on.  This website and people like you are a blessing to newbie navy moms like myself and I truly appreciate your efforts.  I want to become informative like you so that I can pass along the valuable service you ladies are doing!

Thank you for the kind words.

I saw your other post. I hope that you were able to connect with your Sailor and that all is well.

I just attended my son's PIR on 24 May. Most sailor go to the USO in Terminal 2 (?)' but it is not behind the security check points. all rules apply to visitors as if they are flying. However, you must be active duty, retired or a dependent to sign -in the USO. Your son will be in a group according to his RATiNG 'A' school and each group has a leader. They must at different times and check in with the airlines at different times. Then return to the USO to get their seabag and stuff. As misslaura said accompany your son to the ticket counter for a visitor's pass. Please share that info with others parents, because some are not aware of the option. It allows more time with your sailor.

My son had to be out of his barracks by 0030 (1230 am) and arrived at the airport around 0145 and we got there around 0330.

Yeoman, This discussion is about MIdway. You mention the USO at Terminal 2. That is where the USO is at O'Hare and that USO is not behind the Security checkpoint. Did your Sailor fly out of O'Hare rather than Midway?

Lemon elephant, my bad.

I was just checking. Thanks.

Do all the sailors fly out of the Midway airport for A school? My son will be flying to Groton, Connecticut. Thanks!
No, my son flew from O'Hare.

Only your Sailor will know his flight arrangements for certain and even Sailors going to the same "A" School could be on different flights or fly from different airports depending on flight availability. Your Sailor will fly out of either O’Hare International Airport (ORD) or Midway International Airport (MDW).See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) will give you more info on that and how to plan your weekend. I invite you to join that group while you are there and to check out the other Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) as well.

The RTC has indicated that those in your SR's PIR will still most likely fly out on the 4th, so I encourage you to plan to leave late Friday, just in case that changes.
