I have reservations for the Navy Lodge $65 per night for my SR's 3JUL13 PIR.  (Look at me already getting military dates!) :-) I booked it because it was close and got great reviews.  I am now second-guessing and wondering if my SR would like to be closer to town or have a pool available to just sit at and relax.  She said she would love a long, hot shower and a good meal.  She misses home-cooked meals and since we are driving, I may just pack her a meal to heat in the microwave at the hotel....

Anyone else staying at Navy Lodge?

How was your stay? I am staying there this coming Thur and Fri night...hoping for the best.

We stayed at Holiday Inn Express in Waukegan.  We really liked the location.  Close enough and safe enough walk to lots of places to eat, Walmart, and Sarge's Meet and Great.  The complementary breakfast was pretty good.  The pool was a nice amenity. The shuttle to PIR left every half hour from 06:00-07:30. With everything being so close it wasn't necessary to rent a car.  Got a taxi from PIR and got back to the hotel very quickly. Sarge's crew was great for transportation.  There were lots of taxis in the area.  Because I came with my daughter so she could see her husband, I needed make myself scarce.  The lounge downstairs in the breakfast room was very comfortable with a sofa, TV and access to a bathroom and the pool. I spent most of PIR day parked on the sofa there. The money we saved on food and transportation off set the extra expense of the room.  The room was very clean.

Quick question, does the sailors get to spend the night at the hotel with their family?

No, there is no overnight Liberty authorized for PIR weekend. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) for more information for how to plan for the weekend. I invite you to join that group while you are there and to check out the other Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) as well.

Has anyone stayed at the Great Lakes Days inn recently?

I'm staying at the Hilton in Mettawa I got$20 off a night because I have a friend who works at the Hilton in San Diego.  It's about 10mins from the base looks nice so we shall see how it goes.

I have a room at Navy Lodge for 8/16/13 PIR, but am waiting on the background check for the Gateway Inn & Suites. So, I may have 2 rooms and will need to cancel one. I need a recommendation as to which one is better. It's just me and my son's girlfriend sharing a room w/ 2 beds. Any thoughts???

Hello all!  We just got back from PIR.  We stayed at the Ramada and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.  Better to pay a few extra bucks and get a decent hotel.  Overall the rooms were okay, but the hotel smells musty and has a cigarette smoke smell to it. even though they say it is a non-smoking hotel.  The walls are very thin and people were going up and down the halls all night and slamming the doors.  The hotel has no security, the back door stays open 24/7 so anyone can come into the hotel at night.  We seriously thought they were selling drugs out of the room next to us because of all the people going in and out of the room all night.  The next morning we smelled marijuana in the hall & and when we brought it to the hotel's attention, they just laughed it off.  My advice, don't stay here.

We attended our son's PIR 8/30/2013.  I HIGHLY recommend the Holiday Inn Express, 611 Lakehurst Road, Waukegan. (847) 473-4400.  I'm VERY picky about hotel rooms, and I was very pleased with not only our room being super clean and quiet, but also with the staff.

I chose Holiday Inn over some of the other ones that were recommended on this site because they don't allow pets and they had a nice pool and Jacuzzi.

Upon arrival, we decided to go into Chicago.  The desk girl scheduled our taxi, gave us the train schedule and tips on site seeing. On the way back from Chicago I called her again, and she scheduled a taxi to pick us up from the train station. Unfortunately, another party took our taxi.  I called her again, and within five minutes she had another taxi there.

The location was great, too.  Walmart, Sarge's meet and greet and many nice restaurants are within walking distance.

Everyone - please take a minute to share your hotel experiences on TripAdvisor. Thousands of people just like you and me rely on the personal reviews to make hotel choices. I always refer to it for every trip I make. Your input is invaluable to other families looking for a decent hotel for PIR!

I just booked a reservation at the Great Lakes Navy Lodge......anyone else stay there? How was the facility?
