Hi everyone I am a single mom and a sailor in the USN. I received 4 year orders to Japan. I was wondering if anyone here knew of a way I can take a nanny with me to care for my son while I am underway. I have a caregiver but just need the know how on getting her there into japan and on base.

She would need to apply for a Japanese work visa as she would not be eligible for SOFA status (you will need to ask CINC of the appropriate base to comfirm that).  Once she has that, you can work on getting her access to base, which isn't as difficult as it seems.  The next step is getting housing to allow her to live on base.

See number 8 for that:

I used Yokosuka because I didn't know which base you're going to.  They all pretty much as the same.

I'm surprised they cut you these orders with sole custody of a minor.  They usually try to avoid it because childcare issues are so complicated overseas.  Not saying there's anything wrong, just very surprised.   Your best bet is to contact your new command/new sponsor and let them know what's up and they can give you fresher information.

Oh ok. This is the same info I found by looking it up in the japan embassy website. I just thought someone else knew of something different. And yes I was shocked when I got that phone call saying I need this billet filled. I was happy that they even thought to call me. I contacted my sponsor and told him my situation and I'm waiting for a reply. I just don't want to sleep on this. Idk how long the process will be but I have seven months so I'm not freaking out to bad. Plus I'm prepared for anything with these orders. They may dissappear or may become unaccompanied. Like you said, this situation is normally avoided. But thanks anyway

Sorry I couldn't be more useful.  There aren't many shortcuts when it comes to this.  I was in Yokosuka for a total of 12 years, and they've really tightened up on who gets command sponsorship and who does not.

You may want  to check to see if your orders are accompanied or unaccompanied..as if they are unaccompanied, your child will not be going with you.  Also what are you E?

FYI...the below FB page would be a better place to get the answers to the questions you are looking for.  It is an Official Naval Website.
