I've been kept out of the loop and am trying to find out as much information as I can about what my son is doing. He arrived for boot camp last night. The only thing that I've been told is that he will stay in Great Lakes for his "A" school. Can someone please direct me to where I can read more information about this and what he might be going to school for?
Thank you in advance.

I don't know as much as others, but A school is the schooling your Sailor goes for after basic. Get them through basic first...
A school is where they learn the basics of their rate. They can be a few weeks, to over six months long. You;d need to know what rate he signed up for to know which A school he will be attending at Great Lakes.
Rate is another term for Job. For instance my bro who is at A School now is rate Machinist Mate.
Found out that he's a "Hull Technician" but is trying to change his rate during bootcamp. Any idea if he can actually do that?
It is technically possible, but unless the Navy has an immediate opening/need, it doesn't happen.
HT is a good hands on rating. He'll learn metal work, including welding, plus skills such as carpentry and plumbing. It isn't "sexy", but he will have extremely marketable skills as a civilian.
No they can not change their job in bootcamp or in "A" School. They signed a contract and that is what they are going to be...HT is a really good job. The only way he will get to change his job is if he is disqualified from HT somehow
I personally think HT is a perfect fit for him right now. Something he can really build on. He went in as a certified welder and already does good solid work. This will give him the opportunity to build on his current skill set... but, of course, mama doesn't know anything and he'll figure it out on his own *sigh* Strong will runs in the family I guess. Love that boy but sometimes get frustrated when I see so much of myself in him LOL
my son is going to A school as a DC?? I am not sure if he is staying in Il or not.. He is horrible giving information. He leaves for BC on 11/26??
DC is damage control. Pretty much exactly what it sounds like, and while every sailor learns basic firefighting skills, that's one thing a DC does, fights fires. Better yet, prevents them and trains other sailors on prevention.
Yes, they go to school in Glakes.
