We had a wonderful PIR 4/26, and it was so exciting to see our son as an Honor Grad. We went to Sarge's and we followed all the advice, but want to help parents of these grads in the future. I would not have missed the opportunity to see our SR for almost an hour before graduation and take pictures with him getting his award, but the trade is missing reserving a good seat for the PIR. They do reserve seats for us right next to the reviewing stand, but the reviewing stand is up high and blocks all vision of the divisions entering the room. The only time we saw our SR was when his division marched in front of us. We also could not see him get his handshake at Honor Grad time, except on the screen against the back room. We also could not take a picture from where we were.

At the pre-reception brief, the officer who briefed us asked that nobody stand up and take pictures of their SR so that others were not blocked. QUESS WHAT? Parents are excited, and they all stand up.

If it is allowed, since you will likely get there at 6:30, go into PIR hall and save your seats with jackets or cushions. Your SR division sign will be posted where they will be standing so that you know where to sit. . Do like Sarge says and get a seat in front of your SR Div up in the balcony looking down. Unless you know for sure that your SR is in the front row, you won't see him very well from the floor.

Then go back in for the honor grad reception and awards at 7:00. They will escort you into PIR when it is time. Once you are in the PIR hall, go to your saved seats in the balcony. HOWEVER ... if your SR is an award winner, you must sit in the reserved seating because award winners are escorted to a special reception after PIR for cake with the admiral and other reviewing guests. Honor grads are not included in that.

The divisions enter PIR in numerical order from least to highest. After they march around in a circle, they will be lined up with lowest Number Div to left and highest number Div to right. For our PIR, there were 11 divisions, and our SR was to the far left as one of the first DIV to enter the room. We could not see around the review podium. The last DIV (highest number div) to enter the room was to the right and we could have seen an SR Div down to right of the review podium. Nevertheless, the honor grad presentation and handshake out in front of the podium was very difficult to see no matter what your SR div is. You will have no problem seeing from the balcony.

Your information is very helpful to me. My SR Graduates this Friday and I certainly will be in the Balcony. Congratulation on your SR Award.

Congratulations on your sailor's PIR. My son was one of the chorus members performing at the 5/3/13 PIR ( his 21st birthday, too!). Do you know if anyone has video/facebook photos posted of the PIR yet? I'd love to try to pick out my SR from the crowd.

This is very helpful info!  Thanks!

I know my son is receiving an award. Are there #1 and #2 Honor Grad's? Why aren't Honor Grad's included in the reception. ? This information is hugely helpful! My son is th RPOC for his division, receiving an award - wondering if RPOC will be at front of division....Thanks to all who share this information.
Only one kind of honor Grad. The reception is for the award winners. Honor grads will get to stand out in front and receive their certificate during the ceremony. My son was our RCPO too. Yes, he will march his division in, he will hold the Cutless (sword), he will stand out in front of his division and acknowledge any reviewing officers walking by. My son graduated last April, so things may be different, but, if you go to the reception early and are escorted into the drill hall for special seating, be sure that you choose to sit in front of your son's division, or you may miss being able to see him standing out in front of his division. When we sat in the special seating for honor grad parents, because it was right next to the reviewing stand, we were unable to see our son coming into the drill hall leading his division. I highly recommend that you find a spot in the balcony directly above your son's division number. From the balcony you can see down into your son's division and see your son and everything happening on the floor.
I have relatives who would love to watch my sons PIR but cannot watch the live streaming at work. Is there a way to watch it later the same day?

It is usually available for a day or more after PIR. Go to the link and see ahead of time (http://www.livestream.com/usnavyrtc and http://navylive.dodlive.mil/).

Thank you for writing this post LALS, it's so helpful!   =)

What are the awards that they can get?
