Where in Japan my son just got to Okinawa Japan and I have some little experience I can share

He will be in Yokosuko.  (spelling)

My son has been at Atsugi almost 1 1/2 years. There are several bases, and some are stationed at bases that are not naval but rather Army, Air Force, or Marine. Do you know which base? Overall most seem to enjoy their time there. It makes travel to Korea, China, Hong Kong, Guam, and the southern Asian nations easier and sometimes a little cheaper. For that reason alone it can be a great place for them to see the world. Your sailor will find out much about Japanese culture, dos and don'ts when he gets there. Ease of access to some of the large cities Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, etc depends a lot on the specific base where your sailor will be. My son and his wife love to go off their base and eat at local restaurants and there is a baseball field with a minor league team not far from the base too. Disney Japan is a train ride away and Fujiyama (while a climb not for the faint of heart) is relatively near.

Thank you for all the info. I am coming to terms with this.  He will be fine.  I am hoping to make a visit there at least once.

rystarr,  what ship, what base?   Mine has been in Yokosuka for a little over a year.   Don't get much contact from him, But he's not normal.   I know of some other supportive Mom's of sailors in Japan,  mostly on Facebook, though.  If you have specific ?'s we can try to help you.
