My husband is now in A school.  He had me enrolled in DEERS since he arrived in boot camp.  His recruiter had told him that I couldn't get a military ID card or any coverage until after he finished boot camp.  Another wife told me that I needed a form (i think it's called DD FORM 1172) that was supposed to be mailed to be in order to get the card, but i never received that form in the mail.  I've been asking him to get the form but every time he never has time to get the form and when he asks a petty officer on his base, they tell him that I don't need the form because I'm already enrolled in DEERS.  When I called the nearest office to make an appointment, I was told that I either need the form or my husband have to come with me.  I was hoping somebody could tell me what I exactly do I need to bring with me to get an ID card without my husband because I'm getting two completely different stories and the nearest office is pretty far.  I don't want to drive a far distance just be sent back,

Thank you

The recruiter was definitely wrong. Hmm, lets see. I would say have your sailor go down to the admin dept and talk to them. if the office said you need the form they will probably stick to it pretty strongly. Even if you are in DEERs to get an ID without your sponsor present you need the form. If the petty officers wont help him have him ask a chief. Have him ask until someone points him in the right direction. When my husband was in A school the petty officers NEVER knew anything especially when it came to marriage or a spouse. Most of his were single so they didn't know, and instead of telling him the right answer or finding out, they would make stuff up. Even farther down the road if your sailor re enlist and your ID expires he will have to be with you or you will need that form. Some ID offices don't require it but most are pretty strict. He will have to step up and get something moving to get that form. I had to kick my husbands butt in gear once lol. We had some questions and his chief wouldn't help him so I told him he better not call me, text me, contact me at all, until he had the answers to my questions. lol Two hours later I got a phone call with all the information. He literally had to walk into his chiefs office and sit down and say I am not leaving until you answer the question or tell me where to go to get the answer.

His recruiter is wrong, the petty officer is also wrong.   Meagan is correct, you need that signed form.  He must go to the DEERS/ID section of PSD (personnel) to get it.  He has to put his foot down and let them know he needs the time to go get it done.  A lot of new sailors are reluctant to question of challenge the petty officers and chiefs, but he must do it, this is a major matter.  The Navy takes a dim view of sailors who do not take care of their dependents, and they are making it hard for him to do so.

Good luck!  If he can't take care of it, we can find someone who can make it happen (chaplain or command masterchief).  Extreme measures, but will provide results if they won't let him go get your form for you.

My ID card expired once while my husband was out to sea.  They can scan the filled out  DD FORM 1172 and turn it into a PDF file and then your husband can email it to you. All you have to do print it out.  That would be faster and more reliable than snail mail.  I would look into a power of Attorney also. That is your safety line while he is gone.  Any other business that you have to do with the navy, can't be accomplished without a power of attorney. example: setting up a move through the navy or talking to the personnel department. Plus who knows what can pop up while he is gone.  You could ask your husband to mail that to you himself via certified mail. That way your sure it was sent off correctly and to the correct address. I hope this helps you. Good luck.
