Help!

I havent heard from my son in almost 4 weeks. He graduates March 7th then off to A school in Pensacola. We are trying to make travel plans

How much time will I be able to spend with him before he flies to FL. The PDF on navy.mil states sailors typically leave the morning after graduation.

Im just looking for other family experiences

They will have from the time liberty is called, which signifies the end of PIR, until about 2100 that evening. Your sailor must not be late returning from liberty! My family and I met our sailor at the airport and stayed with him until they boarded their plane the next day. We had driven to PIR instead of flying so that we could have the flexibility to pick up and go whenever we needed to. Good luck and congratulations to your soon to be sailor!!

I agree with everything Gtfmom said.  I had planned to be in Chicago the whole weekend, flying out on Monday, because I wasn't sure what was happening with my son.  His birthday was 2 days after PIR. It turns out, Ma Navy doesn't care if he spends his birthday with his mom! He left from O'Hare at 1845 but was dropped off at 0630. I had the whole day with him in the terminal.  They are very nice about giving passes to Navy families to allow them to go right to the gate with them.  He did have to go with me at the reservation desk when I got the pass. I flew out on Monday. I spent Sunday at the Art Institute!  Amazing...want to go back to see all I had missed.  :-)

My son also flew to Pensacola the day after PIR last year. We had him after PIR until about 7:30. He had to be back in the barracks by 8:00 PM. His flight the next day did not leave until 5:30 PM so we met them at the airport at 7:00 am and spent the day with him in the airport. We had rented a car so we could get where we needed to be without waiting on taxis and without the added expense. We stayed until Sunday and we were really glad we did because we were exhausted after the 2 non-stop, rushed days before. We were able to sleep in and catch up on some needed rest.
We had our son until around 9pm that night and then met them at the airport at 3am. We stayed at navy lodge (he just wanted to relax and eat in) until we took him back to the barracks, then since we found out he was flying out of OHare booked a room there so we went and stayed there making being at the airport so early easier and our smaller kids could stay in the room. After they got their stuff dropped off at the USO he was able to go to the room, change and relax with us from about 7am until around 11:30. Then we got our passes, he checked his bags and we went through and waited for his flight. It was worth paying for 2 rooms (1 at navy lodge and 1 at the airport) for that night.
This info was very helpful. Thank you! Do you know if the Hilton the only hotel at the airport?
He also went to Pensacola.

Join the PIR group for your SR. There is lost of information posted there and others with loved ones in the same TG and division as your son.

Typically you have the day of graduation. Sailors do usually leave for a school the following day and have to be back to bc around 7:30pm. Once in a great while, the sailor may be unable to get a flight out sat, and may have that additional day as liberty. They don't normally get their orders until the day before graduation, which makes planning hard. Since we came from ny, we chose to drive in the unlikely chance that our sailor flew out Sunday. He did not. We had to have him back to bc at 7:30, and then were able to meet him at the airport at midnight and stay with him until he took off. You can meet your sailor at the USO and then go to the airline desk with them and get a special pass to go through security and wait at the gate. Hope this is helpful!!! I hated that radio silence part of bc!! Hang in there and keep your phone close!!

Yes, he will most likely fly out the day after PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend.
