My son graduates this Fri and will be in GL for A school . He asked me to bring his tv, ipad and cell..are these acceptable?  I was looking back on previous discussions but they seem to be a bit older and I wasn't sure of the current rules.  Is there a list of what they can/can't have during the different phases?

Thanks for all your help!!!

I was worried about this too but my daughter who is also attending A school in GL for 40 weeks assured me that as long as they have it when they take inventory for the first time then they are allowed to have it. I went shopping with her all weekend and purchased a ton of items for her room. She bought a lap top, juicer, blender, towels, sheets, pretty much anything she would have needed for a college dorm. We made about 15 trips from the car to her room this past weekend.

This is good to know...but when do they take inventory? Would this be when he is processed right after graduation on Fri?

He can't take anything with him when he first goes to in processing right after PIR. Not even his phone. Once he gets done with indoc on Friday around 4-5 he will call you to pick him up. When you take him back for the evening (around 830-930) that's when he can take his phone, laptop. Etc
It doesn't have to be when they first take inventory. They have to have a chit for items such as a tv, xbox. My husband was there for about 4 weeks and then bought an xbox.

Some of the barracks allow stuff to be out of the locker when not in use, but yes, they need a chit for that.  Some of the barracks do not, or if they get a room with roommates who already have the big items out, there may not be room for theirs.  Laptops and small electronics are always a good option, and yes, they may have their phones.  Some barracks do not allow food, some do with restrictions.  Some allow the use of personal bedding, some do not.  The longer the school, the more they are allowed in most cases.  They will get the details when they check in after PIR.

Remember, they may change rooms or barracks.  A lot of stuff means a lot of crap for them to tote by themselves.  And when they get orders to C school, they might or might not be able to request a pack out.  There's always a transferring sailor giving stuff away at the end of A school.

Just would be nice to know what to bring for them to PIR. Since we are driving we can throw it in the car before we come. I wish I could afford to go out and buy it all but can't. What about civilian clothes can they have those? I guess we can always ship it to them.

They can store their civilian clothes in their locker until they are allowed to wear them in a couple weeks.  I would suggest their underthings for sure.  Some of their clothes may not fit well now, so maybe a smaller selection so they can try them on?  If they want their own shoes, I'd bring those, they are heavy to ship.

After PIR they will want their small electronics.  Every barracks seems to have different policies on big items like TVs, and I don;t know of any which allow desktop computers.  Guitars are fine.  Personal bedding also depends on the individual barracks.

My SR's PIR day is 6/13 - and will be staying at GL for A school (51 weeks). When I gat a call on Friday I asked what he wanted us to being, he said I have no idea what I can have. Lol I told him I heard he can have just about anything as I'd in a college dorm. We are driving and only three hours away. I plan to pack most of his electronics (not TV) and favorite clothes, blankets and pillows. If he can't keep it we will just bring it back with us. Sound like a good plan? What and how does he get a chit for things. I assume he will get this info sooner or later.

My son graduated on the 6th.  On Sunday he went out and purchased a laptop, food (cereal, breakfast items, soda, juice.......).  He didn't want bedding.  Under garments.  No regular clothes.  He'll never reach phase 2 or 3 because he's done on the 23rd.  He heads to his duty station on July 21st.  His roommate has a tv (he said he'll use his laptop to watch movies) so no need for him to purchase one.  He was able to bring in his phone after he checked into the ship (barracks).
