My son enlisted as an E-3 before bootcamp. I was wondering if you can tell me besides his base pay, I believe is $1805 per month what other money if any will he be provided while he is at boot camp /A school?  He told us something about he owed the Navy money for things purchased while in boot camp something like $650? I was wondering what kind of money will he have to live on after boot camp while at A school? After taxes, he is single ?  He will be in SanAntonio.  Will he be allowed to eat on base and who will do his laundry? Does he need to pay someone to do his laundry?

While in A school, your son will be housed and fed at the Navy's expense. Any allowances for housing and subsistence (food) won't be put in his pocket until he has reached a rate that allows him to live off base, long after A school.

The Navy will train your Sailor to wash, iron and fold laundry at no additional expense. ;)

Ha, true.  The barracks all have laundry rooms, last time I used one, it was free.  I assume they still are.  He will need to buy his own detergent.  Tell him to watch his laundry like a hawk, it actually gets stolen out of the dryers.  He will need to pay for any dry cleaning.

The things he had to purchase initially in boot camp were items such as underwear, socks, toiletries, and so on.   They make them buy them there instead of bringing them so they can control who has what items and so everything is identical.   Not his uniforms, as some think.   He gets a uniform allowance once a year for the upkeep and wear and tear.

Actually, he will have plenty of cash burning a hole in his pocket.  The Navy does offer savings plans and financial training, he should take advantage of that.

Taxes... some states do not tax active duty, some do.  Very important to know your home state tax laws.

Thank y'all.  He has never had to take care of himself financially.  I hope they talk to him about saving and planning :)

Oh, they do.  Will he listen?  Maybe not at first, but as long as he doesn't buy a car, or a lot of fancy electronics, or go out on the town a bunch, A school is a good place to save up.

Thank you :)
