I have no idea if I am doing this right or not but here I go. My son is leaving for boot camp on 8/5/14. I have no idea what to expect. My heart is breaking and i feel so alone. I feel like I am being silly for being so emotional but it is going to be so hard.

Hi BCR0095!
My daughter has been in DEP since October and leaves the 5th for MEPS and ships the 6th to GL. I've been reading as much as I can about what to expect at bc, what to take, etc. She'll be going to San Antonio for MA A school after bc.
She's my youngest and only girl so this has been pretty emotional.

I understand. BCR is my only child/son so this transition is hard for me than him...........  My son signed on DEP Nov 13, leaves MEPs the 5th, and Ships the 6th to GL, then Florida for A school. See look at you you are talking like a Pro Ma Ma already ;) Sweet!

It was really hard for me when he wanted to run around with friends and I remember thinking BUT why don't you wanna stay home with us??? well, dah, he is 18 and he does have a life and so then of course I had to revert to my teenage yrs and thinking. So then I would sit and bust into tears while my husband and I were watching TV or talking. You KNOW the FULL out Puckered lip, prunned up face, bawling sob.........yep. Needless to say I'm doing better ;)

"You KNOW the FULL out Puckered lip, prunned up face, bawling sob"

I love the imagery - I am going to practice that expression everyday - saving it for the right opportunity to use. You'll be surprised how fast 5/6 years will go by. My sailor is a civilian now. It seems like yesterday that we took him to the airport. Navy For Moms didn't exist then. We didn't know we were supposed to be upset. We dropped him off at the airport. He gave his dad a quick handshake (that is what men in our family do) and me a quick hug, grabbed his bag and walked thru the door to the terminal.  I got into the car and said, "Where should we go for lunch?"  Weeks later we got a letter from our son - it was at that point that we realized he was going thru HELL!  Ladies, you will all survive and reflect back on this period with fondness and humor. This is going to be a wonderful time for you and your sons/daughters. Good luck to all.

BunkerQB I'm glad I could provide you imagery, I was more hopeful of a smile, you keep on practicing and let me know how it works out :) Thank you kindly for your words of encouragement, and your right on about surviving :) What does your Sailor do currently? Take care!!

My former sailor went into the Officer Candidate School program 6 months after he graduated from college with an electrical engineering degree. He was a nuke officer on a sub. He finished his commitment and came home 2 years ago. His wife (fiancee at the time) was not keen on being a military wife - she is very attached to having her large extended family nearby. He is doing well. Works in the civilian sector. Our sailors are well trained. My son said the enlisted guys do not take advantage of the educational opportunities that are available (some take classes and all but he feels they should push the envelope). Get as much technical training as possible - it will really come in handy if he/she decides to re-enter into the civilian workforce, after the Navy.

haha thanks for the smile and chuckle... I'm feeling exactly what you describe, full lip pucker! Even when she is home her bf is here and they are hanging out together... I feel like I'm missing out on this last week. I want to yell at everyone that she's mine first... But I'm trying to be nice and share :)

Ahhhhhh Dannell, you are in deep doo-doo. Wait probably NOT since you have a daughter. My former sailor is now happily married and lives just 45 minutes from us. That is the good news. The bad news the in-laws love him so much, they monopolize his every spare moment. Occasionally, I catch that look in their eyes - the "why-are-you-still-here? you've-done-your-job-now-go-away-he-is-ours-now!"  It's mighty discouraging when you feel like putting your hand up and shout, "I AM THE ONE WHO GAVE BIRTH!"

I am thinking of adopting some young kids - girls only, of course.

Right... I'm surely realizing that I no longer have much control over  what she does or who she spends time with...she is independent and headstrong and challenges me everyday - I love her even though she drives me crazy! :) Thankfully he spends more time with her at our house rather than her at his so at least I have that...

LOL!!  We have to find the giggles too! I'm so incredibly proud of our future Sailors! I'll Private Message ya :D

Hi there! My son leaves for MEPS 8/5/14 and BC 8/6/14 headed off to the Great Lakes, You Mama are not being silly for being emotional! I have had many emotional ups and downs....... this is a time of growth for our children into adulthood and for us it is a transition as well ;) It's ok to cry, it's normal to feel emotions. Their our children :D  I have tried not to be an emotional basket case around him (I find my alone time for this) because he has pressures and changes he is facing, and most of all he needs to get focused in. You are in a good place by being here! I have met great people to chat with and share on good days and bad! Embrace him when you have him close ;)  Big Hugs!! You got this!! add me if you'd like to chat

p.s where is he shipping out to? what will he be doing? and is he your only?

Take care,

BCRs Mom

Thank you so much for your kind words and advice. I have been making sure not to get emotional around him. I am grateful for this website (although it is a learning as I go thing). My son will be going into the Nuke program after BC. He has a twin sister that is staying home and going to college (Thank God). I would really be a mess if they both left. Again thanks for your support.

Your so very welcome! Well, we can learn together. My son will be going into AO, Aviation Ordnance. Glad to hear you will have at least one staying behind to keep you company :) You will make it through this :)   Today is up and down for me :(... feelin like a basket case.. but it's OK! It's OK! really  :) ughhhhhhh
