OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed. Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.
**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Welcome Greta!I'm on my way out the door right now so only have a minute-you definitely want to join the "nuke moms" group as you can get answers to many of your questions there. It's not really nuclear "engineering" school but when all is said & done & your sailor finishes all 3 schools (A school, Power school & Prototype) they will be a qualified nuclear reactor operator. It's a wild & crazy ride that's for sure! Hope to see you on the nuke moms page - feel free to message me if you have questions!

First thing to do is read the stuff in the following:
Survival Guide for NavyForMoms Newbies
- Your son needs to get thru boot camp first.There is the "academic" aspect of things, the physical side of boot camp and then there is the emotional/psychological side of the bootcamp - being away from home, being yelled at - being with a bunch of strangers, etc. etc. Many don't make it. You must do your very best to support him. Make this about HIM, not you.
- Secondly, please try to look on the bright side of things. Your son qualified for one of the toughest rating to get - he had to score extremely high on his ASVAB to get it. If you get thru A school, Power School and Prototype and completes his commitment to the Navy, he will be well trained for a civilian job. The next 5/6 years of his life will be the most challenging he will have ever encountered in his young life. The rewards are immense.
- After bootcamp, you should be able to talk to him on a regular basis. I would recommend that you go to his PIR (boot camp graduation), his graduation from Power School. Definitely visit him wherever he is stationed - Hawaii? San Diego? Guam? Washington State.
Your son is on a path to a wonderful career (in the Navy and outside of the Navy). He'll have many opportunities laid out before him. Look around, many parts of this country is still struggling with economical recovery. Your son's training will be paid for by the Navy. He will get income, medical dental benefits. He will have an opportunity to see many parts of the country or the world. Additionally, he will have his GI Bill to use to further his education. If you are thinking that he is growing up and going to be away from you and change in the next 5/6 years - that is a definite YES. But isn't this what you have been raising him to do? You wouldn't want him to sit at home playing computer games all night long at 25? would you? So please, please look at all that is positive, put those blinders on and be happy for him.

By the way, my son is a former nuke officer on a submarine - I have gone thru the whole nine yards.

gretamae, you and I both have son. My old son is happily married and lives just 45 minutes from us but we don't see him that often because of time commitment to his job and her family. I understand you feelings - you look back to when they were toddlers and you have all the time in the world with them. You'll survive. You'll be OK.

HI gretamae, My son got to Bootcamp on 8/12. He will go to Goose Creek for Nuke School afterward. There is a good chance they may be in the same class, since they are only a week apart entering. The schooling is very very difficult and I have been told not to expect too much contact with him. I am going to be asking him to just shoot me a quick text that all is ok every couple days, just so I know he is alive and kicking. We are planning on going to visit him for Thanksgiving and there is a good chance he will be home for Xmas during stand down when the school closes.
I have researched the Nuke school and also am a member of the groups on here and also on FB. If you are FB let me know and we can connect. Anytime you want to chat send me a message.
