For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed. Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.
**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

PIR DEBRIEFING
INTRODUCTION: A place for parents and others who have attended PIR and graduation weekend to share comments, suggestions and ideas that will hopefully make it easier and more enjoyable for other familes who are preparing for their own PIR events.
WHAT TO DO: This is an 'interactive' forum, with each person encouraged to start new topics (by posting your comments in the 'blank' at the top of each page) -and- respond to individual posts (by clicking 'reply' on that particular post).
ALSO: Over time, I will be organizing some of the posts herein as a sort of 'guide' which will be static -- that is, there will be no new posts to that discussion... thus it will not actually be a 'discussion' but more of a factual and flowing narrative that takes the reader, moment by moment, through happy hours of PIR, covering the basics with good recommendations about what to do, what not to do, and how to do (or avoid) doing it.
To get started on this process, it would be very useful to hear from you regarding which posts and/or particular information do you think should be included? Sincerely, I look forward to hearing from you and transcribing our collective wisdom for those who will attend PIR soon.

Yes, it matters. http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/ad_military_retirees.asp gives the Uniform of the Day.
All Pass-in-Reviews at Recruit Training Command are formal ceremonies.
Military personnel participating in the ceremony shall wear the seasonally appropriate ceremonial uniform. Military personnel who arrive as guests shall wear the service dress uniform or service dress uniform equivalent. Military members who arrive in working uniforms will not be permitted inside the drill hall.

Based on when your recruit shipped, PIR is either PIR 09/26/2014 TG 46 - 9 Divisions (299-304, 819, 820, and 946) or PIR 10/03/2014 TG 47. Click on the one that includes recruit's PIR date and then click join in the upper right. There is or will be a discussion in the PIR group for your recruit's division and the brother division. Others with loved ones will be sharing what their recruits have shared wit them.

My son PIR date will be 10/10/14 we will be flying in from LA. need suggestions were we should stay. We will be in a taxi so the closer the better.

We stayed at the navy hotel, right next to the base....we are also from CA. I recommend you rent a car for numerous reasons...you can take them off the base (once the ceremony is over and they will love to crash at the motel....or go to the mall....or out to eat...we actually had three cars and many people and too our sailor into Chicago ....not allowed, too far from the base....but we weren't caught and nothing is wrong unless you are caught...oh my!!
The place is the Navy Lodge in Great Lakes and runs MUCH cheaper than anywhere around. It is 45 minutes from O Hare...so you will need a car.

Ok, personally I didn't encourage my daughter to break the rules right out of BC. However, she flew out Saturday afternoon and was given permission to go into Chicago then so we took the train from O'Hare to downtown and had her back in plenty of time for her check-in.

MorningGlory, it's great that you got that extra time away from the airport with your Sailor on Saturday. It was good that she had a later flight. Those with later flights are often able to leave the airport.

Yes, lemonelephant! I was so grateful for every minute I was able to spend with her - wherever we were! It was good to have the extra time on Saturday although I know she was restless and ready to begin the next step.

Mom-to sailor-Alli_Div950-10/29, Chicago is within the liberty limits of 50 miles from the RTC for PIR weekend so you weren't breaking any rules. If you thought that you were breaking the rules then it is not wise to post that you broke the rules.
Recruits may not travel more than 50 miles from base during liberty, meaning no further than downtown Chicago. (page 3 of http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/fam_guide.asp)
Graduating Sailors must stay within a 50-mile radius of RTC. (7. in http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/rules_liberty.asp)

Spoke with my son tonight. His PIR is 10/3/14. He said he won't know the length of his liberty for another week or so. He does not yet know where his "A" school is as he is choosing a different contract next week. He found out he has too much student loan debt for his original top secret contract.Is it common they get liberty for Friday and Saturday? My husband and I were going to fly home on Saturday afternoon or evening.

If he is able to choose a contract with "A" School or training in GL, then he will have daytime Liberty every day of the PIR weekend. If he chooses a contract that has "A" School or training away from GL then he will most likely fly out the day after PIR. If you have not made your flight arrangements, then plan to fly out on Sunday just in case he does stay in GL and then even if he flies out Saturday you will be more rested for your own flight. If you have already made your flight arrangements, then only change them if you can do so without a large fee. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend.
