Hi
Does anyone know how the BAH/BAS works at the Coronado north Island base. My son got married July 18. He added his wife to his page 2 and had her put in DEERS. She is on his Tricare now and received a new ID. He hasn't checked out of the barracks as one of his supervisors told him not to check out until he receives BAH. It's been 2 months and he still isn't seeing any BAH or BAS. He went and rented an apartment August 1st and of course is really close to running out of $. He said he has no idea who to talk to on base that the supervisors in his "Shop" tell him to wait it out. I'm wondering if he isn't getting the BAH as he hasn't checked out of the barracks yet or who he would even go talk to to straighten it out.

They will NOT give him BAH as long as he is in the barracks!!!!! He should check out immediately. His LPO is giving him very bad advice. He needs to go to Personnel ASAP and talk to the pay people there, people trained to know the answers, NOT his supervisor who may be going off old information. Used to be a married sailor could stay in the barracks for free, and that is no longer true. (unless he is at school, that is different)
It can take several pay cycles to get the BAH, up to eight weeks. However, they can charge him for staying in the barracks in the meantime.
Is he on a ship? Go talk to the pay clerks. If he is on shore duty, go talk to PSD. If his work says no time to do so, he must put in a special request chit for time off to take care of his dependent. His chain of command pretty much has to say yes or explain to their bosses why they are denying him a chance to take care of his family.
If he gets really strapped for cash, he can get an emergency advance, interest free, from Navy Relief. He can also use the services on base which help junior sailors financially (food pantry and so on). Ask Family and Fleet Service Center for information.
