my fs wil be leaving in approx 8 1/2 months for basic. Im new to all this so as a mom I have a few questions. Hubby and I were told our daughter will start getting paid (E3) due to 3 years of ROTC, does she start getting paid on her first day of boot camp, is that correct? Also when she's at bootcamp does she pay for anything besides pictures? After bootcamp when she goes to schooling (whereever that may be) does she pay for housing or anything? Trying to get her prepared for things as for me also. This leaving the nest is a touchy thing I actually bawled this evening while talking with her dad. Do they allow them after bootcamp and at there schooling to have their car? Things like this. Can they have any bank account set up b4 they leave and use that or does it have to be through there bootcamp? So if anyone knows please comment or private message me. Just trying to prepare her a lil more for the real world...Thanks in advance

At boot camp, they can set up an account through one of two credit unions, or choose to use the hometown banking.  Using the credit union option is often simpler as there are branches on every base they will go to.  Navy Federal allows deppers to set up an account prior to departing.  They won't actually have access to their account during boot camp, if they need to pay for incidentals and toiletries, it comes out of their first check.  Stuff like stamps,  running shoes, and their ditty bag are things they pay for.  The uniform allowance goes in, then it comes right back out on the same check.  First check is always quite small.  The pay is taxed.  She only needs enough cash to eat something on the way to boot camp.

How much pay they pull during basic depends on their contract.  Some get paid E-1 throughout, then begin the E-3 after they graduate, some get the E-3 pay retroactive to their first day upon graduation.  There are many variables, the recruiter should be able to explain the specifics.

She will not pay for her housing in A school, she will be in the barracks, sharing a room with three or four others.  Like a no-frills dorm with a curfew and a really strict dress code.  Individual barracks will have different rules.  She can expect to live on base until she advances to E-5, or marries.

Great Lakes does not allow their student sailors to have cars.  Many of the training commands do not.
