OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Long story short, daughter was DEP for January.  Recruiter called late Monday and said she could go earlier...as in Tuesday morning!  Went to MEPs Tuesday, flew to BC Wednesday, I got the call a few hours ago that she's arrived at BC.

Because I was expecting a little more notice....we were completely unprepared for ~18 hours notice she was leaving.  (Recruiter had previously said if she was going to leave early, we would have at least 2 weeks notice)

My husband is active duty Army, so we're familiar with the worst part of the military (hurry up and wait, no news is good news, etc), but we don't know a heck of a lot about the Navy, and things have changed a lot since he was in basic training, so I have a few questions.  Fortunately, due to the Army experience, we know a lot of what she was told by the recruiter isn't accurate, so I'd like to get some answers from those who have recent experience lol.

1.  Recruiter says she will get paid on the 1st of November.  Doesn't sound right to me, and I found somewhere on this site that says 3 weeks.  Realistically, when should we expect her first direct deposit?  The minute we heard she was leaving Tuesday, we rushed to JAG and got Powers of Attorney, so I can take care of her bills, but....having some extraordinary expenses of my own due to a lot of damage to a rental home we own, so tacking her bills on top of the house and our own bills...yeah, it's going to hurt, so I'm trying to budget for both of us right now.

2.  How much money does she need in BC?  I realize she will have to buy some of the things she needs at the NEX, but I have no idea how much to put in her bank account, and how often to put money in there.  She will not have access to the account her direct deposit is going to go to, but she does have a debit card for another account I can put money in for her.  I sent her with the $25 in cash the recruiter said to send, but I don't know if she spent any of that at the airport for food or not.  

3.  Will her recruiter have copies of whatever paperwork I need to invoke the SSCRA on her accounts?  I know some people have received a copy of the enlistment paperwork in "the box," and I did text her to send that if possible, but the sooner I can get her interest rates dropped, the better.

One more question.

Recruiter told her she will graduate (PIR, I know now) 12Dec, and that she would be home for Christmas.  Everything I'm reading says she will go straight to A School (aviation electronics technician, Pensacola).  IF the recruiter is right and she can come home for Christmas....who buys that plane ticket?  The Navy or the SR?

(Pretty sure he's wrong about this...)

She would buy her own plane ticket for holiday stand down as it is leisure travel.   Yes, she'd go to P-cola first.   The dates for Great Lakes A schools are the 19th to the 4th, there is a decent chance her command will follow the same dates... but do not book travel based on that guess!

1.I think she will be there soon enough to receive pay on the 1st!

2. She will be given a debt card to use in the NEX for her toiletries, the cost of her diddy bag and uniforms will be deducted from her 1st check. So there is no need to deposit any money.

3. Sorry don't know what SSCRA is hope you will explain that to me!! But I do know most send their paperwork in the kid the box
If her PIR is 12/12 she will fly to her A school(paid by the Navy) usually the day after graduating. Not sure the actual dates of this year's holiday stand down but it's two weeks so she will be allowed to travel home either the 1st week or the 2nd half of the stand down at het expense

No, she will not have been there long enough to receive pay on the 1st. It takes about 3 full weeks for everything to make it into the system. So her first pay day will be 11/14/2014 (the 15th is a Saturday). The Page, When Will the Recruits be Paid? and Information for Spouses, will give you more info on that.

We sent our son (PIR 10-24-14) with $40, two calling cards and a book of stamps. He had money left.
