I'm traveling to Groton next week for BESS graduation. Can anyone whose experienced that comment about it? Also, would like suggestions on what to see around the area and good places to eat. Thanks.

I went to BESS graduation in Oct. Nice small ceremony. They will stop between each presentation of certificate for you to get a good picure. Your sailor will have to get you on base. There is a small parking lot next to main gate that you park in and your sailor comes and then you can drive on base. My son met me about 8am. We ate at Paul's Pasta, homemade pasta, very good. Also, S&P Oyster House in Mystic was excellent. A little pricey but worth the money since were celebrating. Mystic pizza is suppose to be good. It rained the day I went into Mystic so I did not stay all day. Go to the Nautilus museum it is very interesting. I wore dress pants and jacket. You may need much warmer clothes. Beautiful area. I am going back in Jan.for A school graduation. There is a mall near by and lots if little shops in Mystic and New London for any last minute shopping. Enjoy time with your sailor. Mine had watch one day I was there so he could not leave base. He also had to move from his room to another room.
Great info, exactly what I was hoping for. Thank you. What is your son's rate?

Ditto Subagirl - one addition - bring a real camera - no cell phones are allowed in the building where BESS graduation is. Other graduations are held in a non secure building, but BESS is usually in a secure building.

Also - Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse are also close by.

I forgot to add the part about cell phones.  Yes bring your camera and take pictures of all the guys.  There is often a mom that could not attend and would like a picture of her sailor.  My son is a Machinist Mate on subs. specialty is weapons.  Just found out he will stationed in New Port News, VA.  He will leave Groton in February.

I'm sorry I did not get back on here in December to thank you both for the information.  We had a wonderful time at my son's BESS graduation.  It was exactly as you said and a memory to treasure always.  He has now completed two advanced trainings and will class up for his A school in May.  I hope your sons are doing well.  Are they on a boat now?  Thank you again for your help in December.

You're welcome! Yes, my son is underway somewhere for some length of time! All I know is he is doing well and sleeps between two ballistic missiles. When he returns he will be moving to GA. His assigned boat has been in dry dock for 2+ years and should be back in commission in October.

Glad your trip went well. Groton in Spring & Summer is very nice. A school graduation is bigger and held in an auditorium where you can have phones. Maybe you'll get a chance to come to CT for graduation.
