The PACT seamen go to a ship to learn their jobs after a few weeks of training in Great Lakes, and may strike for a rating they qualify for in that first year.  That might be done by taking a test, other jobs require being sent to an A school.  So during his first year in the Navy, he will be assigned to a ship, which may or may not deploy.  He cannot ask for a certain job during boot camp or during seamanship training, that is done at his first command.

All the pact seaman jobs tend to be seagoing rates.  None will give the guarantee that he would be "home" for an entire nine months.   Many sailors miss the births of their babies.  You may have to go through part or all of your pregnancy with the support of family and friends.

He will get paternity leave, which is ten days to use during the first year after the birth of a child.  It can be split up and used with his regular leave.

Here is the group for people with a sailor in the PACT program, perhaps they can give you more detailed information, and provide support!

Dear Manilyn, welcome to Navy For Moms. There is no guarantee on having a job that will give him more family time. Everyone wants that. The needs of the Navy will take precedent over your personal needs. The faster you get accustomed to that fact of life, the better your live will be.  He may be thousands of miles away. You should start by leaning on your family and your Navy support group (s) to see your thru the pregnancy and birth of your child.  Being married to a person in the military is not for everyone. But the opportunities for your man are wonderful if he learns to take advantage of them.  His success will  require a great deal of support from YOU.  That means you will need to take care of yourself, your child (or children), the household, the finances. It won't be easy but you can do it.
