My Son arrived in Norfolk the week before Thanksgiving.  He is stationed on the USS Eisenhower that is in Dry Dock right now.  He still has not signed up for Base housing.  I keep talking to him about it but he said people are too busy to help him right now.  He is living on the ship on a bunk.  What can I do to help him?  He is spending a ton of money on a hotel room every weekend just to have some space.  How can I help him even though he tells me he is fine, but broke all the time.

You cannot help him. He will figure out where he needs to be and when.

Also, not sure if this breaks OPSEC, but be careful about posting where a ship is.

The ship has a procedure to place junior sailors in the barracks.  However, they have to be proactive about getting signed up for that, even if they have to chase down their LPO/chief/div-o.  People are not to busy to help him if he is in their faces about it.  Be aware, there is not always enough barracks rooms to go around, and if his berthing area is not affected, the Navy will not pay for an apartment or hotel room.

You cannot help him, he has to make this happen.  If nothing else, he should make friends with sailors who need a roommate in a private house or apartment.

CD, dry dock itself is not an OPSEC violation, discussing specifics of  what is being done while there would be. Except painting, we all know there is painting going on.

So the navy does not give you housing if your ship has a berthing area that is not being worked on?  I am a bit confused because his recruiter said if he is not at sea the navy will give housing.  I know I know they all lie but this seemed right?

I think you need to read Anti's post again.

I guess I just need to find answers elsewhere --  I am not planning on driving down and doing it for him but giving him more suggestions.  He and I are both new to this.  My husband is a Marine -- so trust me I get enough of he will figure it out at home.  That is why I searched out forums.

So to summarize,

you asked if he had to pay and Anti told you not for barracks he doesn't. However if he wants to stay in a hotel then yes. You asked again if the Navy pays for housing and intimated the recruiter may have lied to you. Again, I suggested you re-read Anti's post which explains what you needed to know. I suggested that if he says he's fine, he probably is.

You came back to say you guess you need to find your answer elsewhere.

Seems like you just didn't like the answer you got.

Mr. Concernedad,

I love our recruiter and emailed with him just today.  I only stated they all lie because that seems to be what I am told when I say the recruiter told me.  I should not have thrown that in, but was only trying to bypass the statement being thrown out again.

I misunderstood what Anti was saying.  This was the only reason why I asked for someone to clarify.  I in no way dislike the answer I got but was only looking for clarification and definitely not confrontation.

I do appreciate you enlightening me and feel very at home talking to you...  Hmmmn are you a former Marine?   Anyway thank you again for the summarization.  I guess I need a little more moxie to hang in the forums...

Nahhh, you're fine. Caught me on a testy day.

Not all recruiters know everything, or their experiences differ from other communities (air vs. sub vs. surface vs. specops and so on).  Not lies so much as informed guesses, misinformation/uniformed about how things work currently.

LOL, always take the forums with a grain of salt and try not to take posts too personally.

Yes, living on a ship sucks.  He has my sympathy.  But there is probably a waiting list for the barracks rooms, and he surely is not getting BAH if there is an open bunk onboard.  Poor kid!
