Some Hopefully Helpful PIR Tips (This is old information, and much of it is no longer valid as of Oct 1, 2017))

Please note much of this information is no longer valid as of Oct 2017***

PICTURES:
Kyle ordered the largest picture package that was offered which included a 10x13 of his division. The price was about $160. It is nice to have a lot of pictures, especially wallets to share.

**Kyle originally told me when you buy the pictures, you buy the copyright, but as you will see from comments below "Copyright" is still imprinted on the back of the photo paper**

TICKETS:(Tickets are now required)*
There are no actual tickets. Your recruit will turn in a list of up to 4 guests. Children under 12 don't count. They do not turn anyone away at the gate, however. Everyone (except children) need to show a driver's license or other valid ID.

PARKING for PIR:
There was a loooooong line of cars from Buckley Road to turn onto Illinois into the base gate. After the graduation it took 45 minutes to get out of the parking lot. We had people in a second car and only one parking pass, so here's what we found. Go around the line of cars waiting to turn right into the base on Illinois (you can't turn left into the base, the left turn lane was blocked with a cone). Then turn right onto Ohio and it will lead you to a small Metro parking lot. This is actually right next to the graduation hall, but there is a barbed wire fence between the lot and base. It is a short one block walk from this Metro lot to the gate. It is a long one block walk if PIR is during a snowstorm like the one on 3/21 was. But you will save a lot of time going in and out of the gate in a car if you park at this lot and walk in and out.

NEX:
This store was MOBBED right after PIR. There were 825 graduates that day. We hit this store the next day when we picked Kyle up for the day and bought some souvenirs. Their prices were better than what I'd found online for T-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. They also had two small tables set up in the graduation hall before PIR. The one by the door where you enter had a much shorter line than the table at the far end.

GETTING BACK TO BARRACKS AFTER LIBERTY:
We were told to drop Kyle off at the chapel, then he had to walk to his barrack. He made it back with 30 seconds to spare Friday night, literally. So allow time for your recruit to walk to his/her barrack. They are not allowed to run in their dress uniform.

AIRPORT TRAVEL
If you are flying to Great Lakes, check into prices landing at the Milwaukee airport versus O'Hare. You may be able to get a cheaper flight and the distance to the base is the same.

Robin:

I'm so anxious to see my son graduate Friday, but I am a photographer so if I am in any position to get a picture of the ceremonial band, I would be happy to take some and email them to you next week.

Robin:
Just got back from Great Lakes late last night. I have photos of almost every trumpet player they had! Although I will warn you ahead of time so you're prepared...all the sailors seem tall, A LOT wear glasses, and it's shocking how much they look alike in identical uniforms, identical haircuts, and oh yes.. outside they have to wear their scarfs around their faces which cover up everything up to their eyeballs! I'm going to sort thru all the photos and will email you the variety. I know they had two bands at the PIR, so I think I know which one is Trae, but if you spot him from the batch of photos let me know, and I'll make sure I send you a higher resolution file.

GRADUATION WAS GREAT!!!!
Congratulations...does the phone call mean he was capped? I guess you'll be getting ready to go out soon too. Best of luck!
I'll look for the white tuba's later tonight (after I finish my taxes), and see what I have.
We were told we held the copyright to these pictures but when we tried to use them in our church directory, Olin Mills wouldn't do it even with me having the negative because it said Do Not Copy on the back. Anyone else with this kind of problem?
I just attended my son's PIR on Friday 4/11. I received his packet of pictures (and being a photographer) I immediately turned them over to look at the back. They are using a Koday paper that has a "Official Copyright - Do not copy" embedded right on the paper. So you basically have two options 1) If they told you that you owned the copyright you can write to them and it only requires a "release form" which you can pick up at a CVS or Walmart photo center. If they sign the release you are free to use the photos for any purpose. 2) Unfortunately if they don't sign a release it will be hard to "copy", but if you need extra prints the order form they enclosed seemed to have very reasonable print prices, especially compared to a studio like an Olin Mills. Hope this helps.
Beth
Thanks so much for the useful information.
Kim,
since you have such a wealth of knowledge and are so willing to help the rest of us, here is another question. How long was Kyle's PIR? I know that they all may vary in length, but since we will have a 6month old with us, any idea of the lenght would be helpful.
Thanks
I just pulled out my PIR DVD to double check. The video is 1 hour and 17 minutes long. Hopefully the 6 month old will do better than my 3 year old did! We were sitting next to a railing in the balcony and he kept hanging on it. Kyle could see him climbing from where he was standing down on the floor and knew we were sitting up there. There is a lot of music during the ceremony and a lot to watch, so I think the baby will be fairly entertained. There is plenty of room off to the sides if you need to walk him/her around a bit. Have a great weekend with your recruit!!!!!!
