How to deal with a driver's license that will be expiring in the home state?

Depends on the state. Some allow military to renew online; others consider the license valid even if expired as long as they are active duty stationed outside the state.  Contact your local DMV.

Don't know your state, but here in NH members of the military can renew their driver's license by mail, FREE.

My son just got a California one when he was stationed in San Diego.

Sailors want to be careful with establishing residency to minimize state income taxes.

Here's a good read from Craig: http://navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/most-sailors-d...

This is especially true if they are from states which do not have income tax, or which do not tax active duty stationed out of state.  Hang onto that residency.

Contact the DMV of the home state.  Our dd lost her driver's license & our home state let her get a new one by mail.

Thanks for the ideas. Most helpful.

Our sons were allowed to have expired license but the requirement was when home on leve at earliest time it had to be renewed but again each state is different

Starting 2006, AZ doesn't tax active duty military.

crypto, are you saying getting a driver's license establishes that State as your resident State? Can't he declare on his income taxes our residence as home?

Getting a driver's license in the new state is a big step toward establishing residency.  Voting is the main thing.  It varies state to state, so best to read up on it at new duty stations.

IL doesn't have income tax for active duty military either.
