Good Morning N4M,

Thank you all for all the wonderful advice, stories, links that you have provided. This has helped me out a lot as we get closer to my daughter's swear in and ship date. I really appreciate it.

Right now, my daughter is having some issues remembering her 11 General orders of Sentry and her terminolody. We have made up flash cards, but it just isn't working. Can you give any advice or ask your sailors what they did to remember these. She has her alphabet down, ranks, and her Sailor's Creed down with no issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again and have a great day. :-)

Try having her write them down -- by hand, not on a keyboard -- over & over.  Writing something out by hand is the equivalent of reading something 3-4 times, for memory's sake.  One of the reasons teachers have kids write out the spelling words over (& over).

That is a good idea. I remember doing that. Thank you again.

There is a Navy deppers site, here is the general orders study guide:

http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2205

Be sure she can repeat them out of order too.  Try making her do jumping jacks and yell them out while learning, because she may have to yell them while doing IT (intensive training, physical exercises).  They don't do that a lot, but it could happen.  I had to repeat the orders while doing push-ups once.  That was fun, yeah right.

Anti M, have you ever heard of a Recruit flunking boot camp for failure to know the general orders? I haven't. Failure would be such a black mark against the Recruit's RDCs that they aren't going to allow it to happen. They have their methods.

"To be especially watchful at night........"

Ah, the good old days. ;)

Ha.  Where's my rum ration?

Actually, if they don't do well on the written tests, they will be set back.  If they fail again, they flunk out of boot camp.  But I cannot recall if the orders were on the tests (and I was the EPO...).    But they do ask the orders and other DEP learning stuff during inspections.  Fail enough inspections and you get set back.  So technically, yes, a recruit could flunk boot camp ... but the not knowing the orders would be part of a larger pattern.

I don't remember ever seeing the orders again after boot camp.  You only have to know them for about 9 weeks.

Gemirus,   try this....(and bear with me as I try to get you there)   Go to Boot Camp Moms (and love ones)    scroll down to answers to common questions.......can recruits take anything to BC with them......things to do in the last month......takes you to a page with lemonelephant ....go to the 2nd paragraph....talks about Craig....go to the second navydep.com/formum.....it talks about 11 general orders    for example 1>  "take charge"....hint:  C.O. #1 and he/she will take charge.    He gives hints on how to remember the 11 general orders.      This whole N4M site is wonderful!   Take advantage of all the readings, click and follow all links.    There's a site by Craig that gives detailed day by day /week what happens at bootcamp.    You will find it  in the  Cryptology group.    I think I have been more level headed and calm due to this site.   Again, read, read, read.   Good luck   My SR's PIR is 7/14.

Do what the RDC do. Every time she messes up, have her do mountain climbers. Seems to work at Boot Camp AND gets her prepared for the fun to come.
