Does anyone have a son or daughter going to OCS (SWO) soon?

Okay, has anyone had a son or daughter that has recently graduated from OCS (SWO)?

My husband is a SWO who went through OCS, although he went through OCS about five years ago. I'd be happy to try to help answer any questions you have though! (And I have a good friend who's fiance just graduated OCS to become a SWO back in April, so she has given me some good updated information about OCS.)

My son went through about 3 or 4 yrs ago. If I can help??

If your son just went thru Officer Candidate School, please join this group

Best of luck to you and your son.

I thank each of you for your replies! No, my son reports end of next month. We were wondering what to expect at HI Moms or the cocktail party, such as what to wear and who can attend it. Any information about the graduation and so forth would  be great!

There were a few in suits, sports jackets, buttoned down shirts. There were some in dressy Khakis and polos. Our Hi Moms was in the evening, so people were more "formal" - don't remember seeing anyone wearing jeans except for kids.  Women were in what I would call "business attire."

The dinner the next night was dressier but still not formal. Didn't see much exposed skin except for a few girl friends/fiancees.  Of course, that was back in 2007.  It could be different now.

In 2009 when my husband graduated, each class designed their own festivities.  Our Hi Moms was a business attire to semi formal type evening with cocktails and dinner the night before graduation at the Officer's Club on base. Most of us wives/fiances/girlfriends were in cocktail dresses, and a lot of the moms/other female guests wore business attire. The men were in suits or sports jackets. The next day there was just graduation in the morning along with a breakfast where they demonstrated chow hall procedures and a victory graduation run, no formal get togethers after, because a lot of people had to be at their next duty station by Sunday or Monday! I know another class that graduated around the same time had a less formal get together for Hi Mom's to cut down on cost and did not have a meal served.

My husband could bring as many guests as he wanted, as long as he bought tickets for them all! We had a group of 8- myself, his parents, his sister, his grandmother, and three friends/mentors who came along to do his first salute. Other people had even larger groups than ours!

A friend who's fiance recently graduated had a similar experience- a semi-formal type Hi Mom's with dinner served, but I'm not sure if they still get to pick their own Hi Mom's.

Your son will have an opportunity to communicate with you and let you know what type of event he and his fellow graduates will be putting on. Not sure where you will be traveling from, but keep in mind that Newport is pretty chilly year round! My husband has had a lot of schools up there so we've been there most of the seasons and even in the summer, it's always on the colder side- so if you aren't used to chilly temps, bring warm clothing! :)

Hello - My son is also in Class 01-16 at OCS.  When will the Hi Moms event take place? I live in Australia, so will be making plans to travel to Newport for his commissioning on Oct. 16.  How long should I plan to be in Newport?

And any good recommendations on where to stay?

Thanks, all!   And Go USN!!

- Deb
