Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Many people do not realize this, but when you get a drivers license in the state you are moving to on orders, you may be changing your legal residency. There may be implications in areas of tax, voting, school tuitions, certain state professional certifications, among others. Please consult the legal department before deciding if this is a good idea. You do NOT have to change your legal residency, or get a new drivers license, or register your vehicle in your new state. There is a law called the Military Spouse Residency Relief Act that allows for military spouses to maintain legal residency after moving to a new state due to military orders. We are from IL and stationed in CA.
If you have renewed your license from out of state, would you please link us to the info and tell us what state you are from? I see this a lot with families on their first PCS. Also, if you have information on renewing license plates from out of state, comment with that info too! I'll start!
IL - IL Military Drivers Instructions
IL - To renew your license plates/vehicle registration, call the Secretary of State @ 217-782-2285 and they will mail your sticker. The IL website does not allow stickers to be sent out of state, so you have to call.

Our DD has retained legal residence in IL the whole time she's been active duty. She was in CA, now out of the country. It was worked well.
My daughter had an expired license the the first 3 yr of navy life. Didn't get a new one till she got married and then did it in home state before going off to DC.
Correct! Military & Spouse do NOT have to change their Drivers License or registration on vehicles! I was in the Navy for 5 years stationed in California (Home state Texas) and never once changed my DL!
The problem arise when you violate the tri-state laws. That is having drivers license in one state, vehicle registered in a second state while you reside in a third state. Rarely enforced......
They can have one once they earn their liberty phases. He doesn't need one, and will need to figure out what to do with it during deployments. The Navy does not provide secure parking for deployed sailors. On the plus side, if he gets stateside orders, he can drive to his new duty station. If not, then again, he has to figure out what to do with the car.
Usually there will be Sailors with cars that will give liberty rides for gas money......
If a Sailor wants to pursue purchasing a car they should check out vehicles at the base's "Lemon Lot." The Lemon Lot is not endorsed by the Navy or Base but secure space is sometimes provided for Sailors deploying or other reason attempting to sell their cars. Good deals can be had. Make sure to run a title check prior to purchasing..........................
