Hello! I was just wondering if it was possible to wait for the rate you want. I am certain I want to go into the Navy and that I want the HM rating, but Ive been told that that rate is rarely open....Ive been told that I could cross rate if I just go ahead and join, but I really want to go in as a Corpsman straight off and get started on my career in the Navy. Is there anyway that I can go through MEPS and just wait for the rating to open up? any advice on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I read your previous post concerning wanting to be a Corpsman. I bit my tongue answering you then because I know some of the parent will get ticked with what I'm about to say, but I think you deserve the truth on what you may be getting into.  I truly think the Navy gives people great opportunities, however, I don't think Corpsman is one of the best choices. (My own personal view)

I know many people have different views, but unlike the others, I am actually going to try to talk you out of it.  Why?

My daughter is a front line trauma medic that just returned from a 8 month deployment in Bagram Afghanistan.  People assume two things: the war effort is winding down. I can assure you it’s not. And that women can't serve in a war zone. I can assure you, they can, and do. Being a trama corpsman you get the worse of the worse.  Remember the movie "The Lone Suvivor" about Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell?  Barely alive, they picked him up and immediately brought him to Bagram.

Everyday, at least 3 times a day, the Tailban will fire Mortar rounds into the base.  Yea, the Navy gave the Army the Phalanx missile defense system, which the Army call C-RAMS.  It pretty accutate, but not 100%.  Some motar rounds get through, and our military are injuried or killed.  Everywhere, while off watch will carry a M-16 for protection, even the Corpsman.  The only place you don't is in the shower.

My daughter can easily understand the idiot males wanting to cleanse the other Muslim religion by shooting each other, but it has been really difficult for her seeing women and children killed, raped, and tortured.  That part will cause her years of therapy.  Not everyone gets to work in nice stateside hospitals.  Some get deployed to areas that most Americans cannot imagine the risk.

Imagine every couple hours, sleeping or not,  having to don your flack jackets and grab your weapon to protect yourself.  Hearing "Incoming, Incoming, Incoming" will quickly wake you up.

Just my views.....

btw:
Here is an excellent speech by Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell.
What a great speaker!!!

Proud American there!!!  God bless him and his team!!!

Part 2 of 2:

Cross rating has very specific parameters, and you cannot just switch ratings when you desire.  It is only allowed after you are an E-5, after two years, and only if the rating you are in is over-manned, and you are moving to an undermanned one.  HM is never undermanned.  (simplified, but that is the general idea)

Choose your rate, choose your fate.  Whatever you sign for is what you will be doing for the length of your enlistment.
