As we prepare for the upcoming deployment let's use this as a place to discuss any questions we may have.

**PLEASE REMEMBER OPSEC AND DON'T POST SPECIFIC DATES REGARDING SHIP MOVEMENT**

Dates may only be discussed AFTER they have happened.

Here's the shipping info.  Remember you will need the specific box # from your Sailor.  ****THIS IS A NEW ADDRESS****

There have been questions from some about seeing the ship off - where's the best location, can they get on the pier?  Anyone know?

Make sure your sailor gets a "Ship to Shore" AT&T calling card.  They can be purchased on the ship and can be reloaded.  You will need the pin # from the card.  Call 1.800.569.2018 to reload - minimum $25.  ***UPDATE 12/29/15*** AT&T will be issuing new cards as of 2/1/16.  You can continue to use any minutes you have on your old card after that date, but you will NOT be able to reload that card after 2/1/16.  Also, until 1/11/16 if you reload your card they are giving 25% more minutes for FREE!

Here's the link to the USPS "Click & Ship".  You can get free boxes/tape etc. from them too.

I will be traveling to VA to see my baby boy sail away.  :(  I can barely type this without starting to cry.  This will be a first for both of us.  Is there anything that I should bring that he may not even know he will need?  I will buy a calling card when I get there to give to him and I told him to download some movies to his laptop.  What about money?  Will he be able to use his debit card while over seas?  So many questions but to be honest I am not even sure what I need to ask.  Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Anne - my son said he was going to use his credit card rather than his debit card.  You get more protection from the credit card company than you do on a debit card - especially if there is any fraud involved.  He's still taking his debit card in case he needs to pull out cash for any port visits.....If you haven't done a POA you should consider one......make sure he has all his bills set up for auto pay while he is gone - put phone on military suspension & auto insurance too (if he has a car).  There's a single sailor deployment checklist.  I'll find it & post it...

Enjoy your visit with him - get lots of hugs <3

Thank you BNukeMom!  I sent him the checklist and told him to use his credit card more!  I'm not sure what POA is though.  I am getting a small box of christmas decorations ready to take even though he says he doesn't care.  He may change his mind later when the time actually comes.   I am trying to remember that this is an exciting time and he will be seeing things I could only imagine!

Thank you for the quick reply!  Our plane leaves tomorrow morning.  Can't wait to see him.  Its going to be a LONG 6-9 months.

Anne - sorry, the POA is the Power of Attorney.  If your son is a member of NFCU (Navy Federal Credit Union) they will notarize it for free for him (but you need your own form).  Otherwise they should be able to do it on the ship for him in legal. And I think the ship may also have the form.  If not I posted one up above somewhere - and if you can't copy/paste/print it you can send me a PM and I will email it to you.

My son kind of laughed too when I gave him the (very small) box of Christmas decorations, but I told him when Christmas rolls around they'll be happy they have them!  I included 4 strands of battery operated lights too!

Safe travels - enjoy your visit <3

Yeah... I Arrived in Norfolk and am at my son's home... But... BUMMER... he is on DUTY now (so we don't see him today), and he has DUTY again SUNDAY (so he leaves right from duty and we won't see him after Saturday)... BUT... the good news is, we're here.  Having Thanksgiving celebration meal tomorrow, then Birthday and Christmas on Saturday.  So happy we can be here.  I will take whatever pictures they will let me on base and will post them on this site for those who could not come.  I will represent my friends.

WooHoo - glad you made it there safely BoomMom!  Have fun - enjoy his birthday, Thanksgiving & Christmas!

Looking forward to pictures ;-)

Hi.... My son is on the HT as well.. I would love to see any photos you have.. I wanted to be there but once the sailors are on the ship, they cant get off.. So there was no way to get me on the base. Im worried about the Middle East activity... :(
