As we prepare for the upcoming deployment let's use this as a place to discuss any questions we may have.

**PLEASE REMEMBER OPSEC AND DON'T POST SPECIFIC DATES REGARDING SHIP MOVEMENT**

Dates may only be discussed AFTER they have happened.

Here's the shipping info.  Remember you will need the specific box # from your Sailor.  ****THIS IS A NEW ADDRESS****

There have been questions from some about seeing the ship off - where's the best location, can they get on the pier?  Anyone know?

Make sure your sailor gets a "Ship to Shore" AT&T calling card.  They can be purchased on the ship and can be reloaded.  You will need the pin # from the card.  Call 1.800.569.2018 to reload - minimum $25.  ***UPDATE 12/29/15*** AT&T will be issuing new cards as of 2/1/16.  You can continue to use any minutes you have on your old card after that date, but you will NOT be able to reload that card after 2/1/16.  Also, until 1/11/16 if you reload your card they are giving 25% more minutes for FREE!

Here's the link to the USPS "Click & Ship".  You can get free boxes/tape etc. from them too.

My son's first deployment.  In the Navy for 2 years.

My daughter has been in for 3.5 years and this is her first deployment.

I am heartbroken.... I mailed a Thanksgiving package (with lots of stuff) to my son.  It sat in Chicago for a week (mailed it 10 days ago), only to find out that customs won't take it because I was a ding-dong and included "foot spray" which he requested.  It's an aerosol so it's a no-go...  DANG!  Learn from my mistake ladies.  Will try to get one out tonight but doubt it will be there for thanksgiving now.

The post office said they would probably return the entire box to me (instead of taking the contraband out and sending the rest)... BUMMER.

Oh no BoomMom!  That is a bummer.....just curious though....did you list it on the customs form or do they x-ray packages & that's how they found out?  I'm not trying to be sneaky with items sent, I'm just trying to figure out how detailed the customs form has to be and of course trying to understand what items are not allowed!

I was told by someone else to just say "snacks, personal hygiene, books" on the custom form.....keep it vague.

What has everyone else done?

I listed it... :(  I would have hoped the postal guy would have looked at it and said it wasn't allowed.  I could have rectified it right then.

Wow, I agree - would have been really nice if he would have said something to you right then & there....way for him to be helpful ~ eyeroll!

I gather he never looked at it.  I'm so bummed.  I'll try to mail something tonight and switch Christmas/Thanksgiving items, but doubt sincerely that it will get there in a week.  :(

I have a question about the ZIP code on the command address in the picture above... my daughter is in a squadron attached to the ship and she gave me a different ZIP than what you posted above for the ship's command.  Is this the case or did I get the wrong ZIP?  And she told me FPO AP not FPO AE... I hope that because the squadron is based on the west coast that this is the correct address.  I just figured all mail going to the ship would have the same basic address.  Please advise and thanks in advance!

Jill - I'm sorry but I don't know if the squadron's have a different address.  This is the latest & greatest info from the ship (I got it while touring the Truman in July) and also from the FRG group....hopefully someone else will know the answer.  I'll try asking on the FB page & see if anyone knows ;-)

Hi Jill,

I usually just read the posts on here. My fiancé's squadron is also based on the west coast and the mailing address he gave me is FPO AP as well. Hope this helps!

Well one more update.  I just called the Post Office 800 # and they said the problem was "unknown as to why it sat in Chicago for a week"  (go figure), but (YEAH!!!) the box is supposedly moving forward and NOT coming back to me as was previously told to me.  Not sure what to believe yet, but hope it gets there within a week.  I'll for certain not send an aerosol again, just in case.
