OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Changing Rates
Hi, I'm a new Navy Mom. My daughter is currently at RTC, SHIP 11 Div. 102. We finally got to talk to her last Saturday. She told us that she is trying to change her rate. She signed up to be an air crewman (AW) but now wants to change to operations specialist (OS). Obviously, it's her decision to make... and I understand that my days of influence are likely over... but I wanted to see if anyone has thoughts/experience/insight on making this change?
I appreciate any insight you are able to share. Thank you.

Usually it is difficult to change ratings in boot camp, not unless there is a reason which makes it something the Navy needs to do. OS would need more people, and AW would need less, plus her ASVAB line scores need to be okay. They won't do it just because she wants it. But if it is offered, it is possible. Is one better than the other? Matter of opinion. OS do go to sea a lot, but same with AW. Why does she want to change? The window of opportunity to do so is extremely limited.

Thank you for your reply. Our conversation was quick, but I was under the impression that it was offered. I'm not really sure why she wants to change, except maybe to reduce her time in the Navy? She had to extend her contract two years to do air crew. I don't know if it's possible to go back to only four if she changes or if she is committed to six regardless of the change. I guess I won't be able to really offer advice, but wanted to be prepared if I got the chance. Thanks

Rita - it's rare to see them offer a different rating, but it does happen. If she has a problem, let's say swimming, the Navy will see that and rather spend a whole bunch of money sending her to Pensacola, the will ask her to reclassify to another rating.
Per OS. Everyone is different, but I know that is one rating I wouldn't want to do. You're in a dark room, with only red lights on. I know I would fall asleep. You mainly work in the Combat Information Center (CIC) loaded with senior levels of the command, which isn't the best choice.
Go Google search Navy Captain Holly Graf of the USS Cowpens. It's eye opening for those that want to be in the OS rating....

Thank you Craig for the reply. I did not know that the OS job would require her to sit in a dark room with only a red light. When she first signed on, she turned down two other jobs that would have required her to sit in a room by herself interpreting code. I don't know if she is aware of this. I appreciate knowing it and will try to make sure she is also aware.
I'm not sure what Holly Graf has to do with the job, except to say she would be working closely/nearby senior levels of command that might be like Holly Graf? It sounds like she is an extreme example of the worst of the worst. I would hope that most senior level commanders would not be like that.

Holly Graf had it in for everyone, especially the OS rating. She was always on those guys and was reported by them for Abuse of Power. Most sailors I know would rather stay away from senior leadership. All I was trying to get across is she will be co-located with very senior people in the CIC. Some sailors actually like it.... Most don't....
Yea, some will say that not all ships can be like that. Look at the facts, you're working in a space that is responsible for locating the friendly, the unknowns, and the enemy and terrorist. If some unknown or enemy is coming at your ship do you think the CO will say "Could you please track that boat before it slams into my ship?", or do you think there will be a lot of yelling in the CIC? The CIC is the heart of the ship, There is no fun on any ship in that area.

I understand what you are saying. I also know that my daughter will be fine where ever she ends up... but I hope that she ends up keeping her original rating. We received two more letters today and she is doing well. She didn't mention changing rates, but they were written a while ago. If I get a chance, I will share this information with her. Thanks
