TxMom, Since your daughter is stationed in the U.S.  She should get a letter from her commanding officer saying that she is assigned to the William P. Lawrence.  Then when the ship leaves port she just needs to notify the phone company.  Which ever company that you  have, most will give a military suspension.  There is no charge for the suspension, and when she gets back she just picks up where she left off.  She should get the letter soon, so that when she leaves it will be in place.  Your phone company should have an e-mail address that she can send it to.

Remind her that if they are only going to be gone for a month, and she doesn't want to suspend her phone that she should leave it off.  Otherwise it may "ping" off a foreign countries tower and she may get a huge charge for overseas call.

TxMom: Phone suspension is where the line/account can be cancelled or put on hold while stationed overseas or deployed. My sailor's phone is still on our family plan (AT&T) and he is now stationed in Japan. We suspended his line for the 2 years as he won't be using his US cell phone while there. I know Verizon has something similar and I am sure Sprint and others do too. AT&T actually calls it a "cancellation of the line and hold phone number" but it translates to suspending the line. When he returns to the US, we will reactive his line and he will have is US phone number back. Hello TxMom,  Welcome.  My sailor is on his first deployment.  They have been at sea since mid October.  They just received their first mail early this week.  Our sons fleet has been running silent because of an OPSEC breach.  We post nothing on Facebook about our sailor.  Remind your daughter to keep her facebook and other social media to the bare bones.  My sons ship is now limited to Official E-Mail.  that is it.  He has answered that but very sporadically.  We were lucky and did receive one phone call, but I know other moms that only got the e-mail.

The first month was very hard, I found other moms on this site that had sailors on the same ship.  It helped to lean on them.  Join your daughters destroyer group, it may not be active, but you may find other moms.  Go onto Facebook and join her ships page.  It is a great place to message questions.  They usually answer in a couple of hours.  Also make sure that you are signed up with her Ombudsman,  They will also keep you informed.  

More importantly make sure that your daughter has all of her paperwork in order, like phone suspension,  Our son thought he did, and now I have fighting with his phone company to get him the military suspension that he deserves.

Keep in touch, thank your daughter for her service.  Remember, when they are at sea, no news is good news.

My daughter has not been deployed yet, of course she just arrived to her 1st duty station in Hawaii.  She is assigned to William P Lawrence and we just have no clue what to expect when she is deployed we are a nervous wreck but so excited for her to serve.  She has been in Hawaii for about a month and I have already sent 2 care packages.  She has asked for very similar things as mentioned in comments below.

Hi DDG Moms, 

It looks like my Sailor is going to be heading off to Spain!!!  are there any other DDG 78  (USS Porter) Moms out there??? I'd love to get some advice.

To all the moms with deployed sons.  One thing I have not seen mentioned for care packages is Jolly Ranchers.  When my son was in Drum Corp, Jolly Ranchers was as good as money.  Everytime we would send a package, or get to see him compete, we would take the largest bag of Jolly Ranchers that we could find.
