I was threatened with a full seabag inspection when I was about to separate from the Navy.  Seriously, as a first class.  No way did I have everything anymore, and had been through several changes.  It would have been very expensive to replace everything, and they could place me on hold in California (we were in Japan) until I had ordered and received all my items.  Crazy.  My husband's command stepped in on my behalf, and my command backed off the threat to send me to the states for separation from service.

Phoenixmom, I’m not sure about the color of the towels, we still have our bootcamp towels for my husband to take,  but I will say they don’t have a lot of room in their racks, which is why they’re not issued more gear, only exactly as much as the Navy thinks they need.

That was the reason for me asking because either he took it with him on his Carrier or he just doesnt have it. I was wanting to make sure he is on point with all of that. My grown Boy so he tells me seems to be a little on the lazy side, notice he had two white towels so I went and bought him towels and socks and white t-shirts. so I have no idea what this kid of mine is doing. but I will have a talk with him. all I hear is I got this Mom. do the towels have to be white? he did ask me to send him black socks white t shirts so I did, figure maybe I should buy him black socks also just in case so he can have. I havent seen any blue shirts at all. Thank You Allison I am keeping note for sure.

Phoenixmom, to answer your question about do they know what they need, the answer is yes. Uniform regulations can be googled easily, it will define everything down to belts, buckles, jewelry, and all the tiny details like that, and when there is a big change like from Type 1 (blues) to Type 3 (green) NWUs,or like when they redid the PT uniform (though less of a concern), signs usually get posted in the uniform shop to aid sailors in their shopping. Commands will issue required uniforms if an additional uniform is needed, such as the flight suit or if they must already need the Type 3.

As far as how many of each item, there is no requirement after bootcamp. For example, my husband owned 5sets of blues, but only opted for two sets of the Type 3 for now, mostly because of cost. I have about a thousand blue shirts of his lying around  lol, but he only has 5 brown shirts. He owns one belt, lost the other one of course, only one buckle, etc. As long as you own at least one of everything and can be ready to go, in proper uniform, you’re good. The only time they actually seem to inspect with that much detail that you have 5 blue shirts, two belts, two buckles, 2 pt shirts, 3 towels, etc. is in bootcamp.

The pea coat you found should be sent to him right away if his command is still in dress blues. On a cold day, that is the only authorized jacket while in that uniform. However, unlike bootcamp and GL A School, they do not usually require that either everyone wears each piece of the uniform or no one does. In bootcamp, it is mandatory that everyone be uniform all the time, whether it’s wearing sleeves up or down, wearing a jacket or not, gloves or no gloves, whatever, but in the fleet, these decisions are usually a personal choice, so long as they are in the uniform of the day with whatever choice they make. Anyway, if they’re in whites or switching soon, it can probably wait :).

I forgot to add, make sure all the buttons are there when it is returned from the cleaners. If they aren't, have them look for what is missing. Not a button you can just run to the fabric store to replace. :)

They are told what uniforms are necessary, and if the uniform is changing they are given the must have date.

That coat does need to be dry cleaned. Make sure you check the pockets. :)

So with all these uniforms that one is needing, they should know before hand what it is they are needing and how many correct? Now do they inspect to see if you have what is needed as far as your uniforms. I have a question Ladies, my son had sent all his belongings home, so I went thru and washed on his stuff  (civilain Clothing) he has this nice thick black Coat I beleive it was from A school, seen pics of the Sailors wearing when they had gotten adopted out for Thanksgiving, can I have that Dry cleaned?I just dont want to mess it up in any way but I dont see any care labels on it.

My son recently had to buy new dress blues. He was grateful there are no longer the thirteen buttons, but says the old cracker jacks are classic.

Right before I got out, they were testing two summer uniforms for enlisted women.  One was styled like the women's dress blue suit, pretty much the same as officers and chiefs wore. It was hot and a terror to care for and store aboard ship.  The other was the white crackerjacks.  I never got to try them.  There was a snafu with the crackerjacks, they forgot to include a white undershirt for women.  We'd never had to have anything under our shirts other than a bra, and suddenly the deep neckline on the crackerjacks was showing a whole lot of cleavage!  Oops.
