J's mom,

There are breaks in both periods you ask about. The program has always planned for allowing two weeks to travel and get a household set up between power school and prototype.  That has been modified in recent years because of delays in the pipeline due to issues at the prototypes causing backups.  Power school graduates are usually on hold and assigned some other duties waiting for prototype.  They still get the usual time to proceed to prototype though, as far as I know.  After prototype, they generally have up to thirty days to report to their first seagoing command, unless they're an MM assigned to ELT or welding school - then they get the thirty days after that school.  There may be occasional exceptions if the ship or boat they are reporting to is about to leave on a deployment (not just a short underway).  In a case like that, needs of the Navy may apply and they may not get the full thirty days.

Txgal-Donna yes the PT at nuclear school is harder than boot camp.  It is all part of the program, you have to stay ahead of the curve in physical fitness.  My son maintained a Good - High which is enough to excuse you from mandatory PT that is held at 5 am.  [Which he usually did anyway LOL].   The point is at Goose Creek if you are ahead of where you need to be they still mess with you but they mess with you ... less.

It is really important to stay on top of the physical fitness though because you need it for advancement, and especially because if you fail it you can be kicked out of the program.  On another forum there is a kid who passed A school but did not pass PFT and he did not get promoted to petty officer 3rd class, and is also somewhat at risked of getting denuked.   My son did 3 to 5 mile runs 3 times a week.  It is up to their Chief.

However the most important thing is STUDY STUDY STUDY and I cannot emphasize this enough.  They really have to put in the study time.

Once they get the hang of it they will do fine but they have to show up on time and always do what they are told.  The first 2 months is crucial.  Good luck I am sure he will do fine.  Being nervous is A Good Thing that means he takes it seriously.

Hey, we are at 1800!!!

Welcome to all of the new moms.  Reading about BC takes me right back there even though it has been almost 2 years.  My son is plugging along in Prototype, but I don't get to talk to him very much these days.  When I do actually get ahold of him he just sounds so tired.  He claims it is going well, but I don't get details.  I will say it seems to be going quickly, so I hope it feels that way to him too!

Hello NUKE moms! I'm a newbie! My son will ship to BC on Sept 4th, so we are still in the nervous/can't wait to see his PIR at this stage... Love reading all of the comments/advice and plan to use it all as much as possible. We are in Oklahoma and plan to drive to PIR.

Stacyyntnd - When you go to the airport  you can bring much more than a phone.  I brought a duffel bag full of things my son requested.  I thought he could squeeze into his bags what he wanted the most.  I was pleasantly  surprised to find he was allowed to bring the whole bag with him.  I wish I had known because I would have stuffed the bag full.  The following week I found myself spending $25. to ship what could have fit into the bag.

When we went to boot grad in Feb we got down there a little before 0600 and the line was already starting. They are very organized getting people in and out and the line moves quickly. However the earlier you get there the better seat selection you have. There will placards telling you where your grad div will be standing. Our sailor went to the airport at 0200 but didnt leave for SC till after 7 pm. She was given permission to leave the airport for awhile. The nice thing was the Chicago city train has a station in the airport basement and we were able to hop on and ride around to get a quick glance of the city. She didn't know her departure time till graduation day and not all Nukes left at the same time.
