Finally!

We make our way to Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall.

Of course I FORGOT to have my camera ready…so I am advising you to get that baby ready from the moment you step through those doors. There ARE photo ops (or should that be PHOTOPS?) all along the way to that security checkpoint.

So don’t miss it like I did!

When you enter the actual graduation grounds you will see Sailors and some SR (the ones performing for the PIR) all over.

Good luck trying to determine who is who!

Though I have heard some wonderful stories of family “spotting” there Sailor before the ceremony starts. Some are working it and that is why they are out and about.

As much as you would like to…try not to pay attention to them UNLESS they approach you. They most likely will not. They are working and could get into BIG trouble.

So no dive bombing them and planting big wet smoochies on them no matter HOW bad you want too…it just wouldn’t be worth it if the repercussions were something like them losing all their liberty.

Save it for the Hotel!

Okay, as you walk along you will notice “markers” with your Division number on it. Like this:

Ooooo this one has Sailors. These are Honor grads from…180! My Sailors Division. The one on the left is the top honor grad for this TG. Woo-Hoo! There are a few more scattered along the way at other markers.

They get to stand here and “be noticed” and assist in any way on the floor. They will go bye-bye shortly before PIR starts to join there DIV.

The markers are to show you where to sit. Just go up the bleachers directly facing your marker. You will be slightly to the left (your DIV right) of your DIV.

So we find our marker, climb up and sit.

And sit.

And sit.

Because we get there as early as they will let us in!

BUT, there is coffee and snacks to buy. Sailor hats for the little guys to purchase and wear ('cause YOU KNOW they are going to want to wear Dad or Moms and they are not allowed too! So if you got little Sailors-get ‘em one. I want one…).

They also run “entertainment” for us while we are waiting. There is a video screen right in the middle of the hall. Naval type videos etc. Honestly…I wasn’t paying much attention! Too excited….but it IS a nice thing to do!

The anticipation is killing me!

It's my understanding that photos outside the drill hall are prohibated.  And that they will take your camera.

Yes...that is correct. When you first step through the doors of the building they will announce at what point you may start taking pictures. I could have swore that they announced it right when we got indoors. Was too excited! There is a "lobbylike" area and then you travel through to the security checkpoint where they will look at your I'D, stamp your hand and then send you through to the drill hall. So you are "indoors" the minute you step into the first entrance (there is a name for the "lobby" area, I'll try to find it.
So just have camera ready and listen for the announcement! There were things to take pictures of along the way IF it is allowed. Naval scenes of navy life.
BUT, the minute you go outdoors...NO pics!
If someone could remember and find out I would love to know and then pass it on. I would have loved to have pictures along the way.
Also, right by the security checkpoint they had a glass curio with DIV photos in it.

UPDATE on the Picture taking:

This is from the RTC Website and has an exerpt about the taking of photos. (Bold and underline mine)

Q.
What items can we bring or not bring to PIR?
A.

Small purses, small diaper bags and cameras/video recorders are allowed. Strollers, car seats and backpacks are allowed, but discouraged due to space limitations. Due to security regulations, luggage is not permitted inside the drill hall. You can leave these items in your car. The taking of photographs/video is allowed at the Visitor Center and encouraged during the entire ceremony; however NO photography/video is permitted outside of these buildings. Contraband also will be confiscated and you may not be permitted entry. These items include but are not limited to: alcohol, illegal drugs, knives or weapons of any kind.

All persons, articles and vehicles are subject to security searches. Metal detectors and other security devises are in use onboard Recruit Training Command. Expect a delay at the security checkpoints due to this added security requirement.
