My son shipped from Arizona yesterday to Great Lakes IL. I am a new Navy mom and very sad to have seen him go. I know he is doing something great for himself and our country, but it is hard to think of that as your watching your baby walk down the airport towards his gate. I did hear from him yesterday when he landed and he said he can call again in about 3 weeks. I read on this site about a kid in a box. I did not know about that and probably would have freaked out to open a box with all his personal effects and not know what it was for. Glad I was able to find that out. This site has been helpful so far. Did anyone else's child ship yesterday?

My son also shipped yesterday, so proud but sad too. Glad to find out about the box, would have been pounding down the recruitment door and burning up the phone lines thinking something had happened. They should forwarn you at the recruitment center. Watched the fist day video on utube, it was very helpful to understand what he is will be up to for someone with no military experience or exposure.

Thank you Denise. I will look for that.

My daughter just left today.  She texted me to say she landed safely, but havent gotten the "I am here call". She gave me every thing she could at the MEPs station so her "box" would only hold what was on her back.

@Amy - your son shipped out the same day? What career path did your son chose? My son went into Advanced Electronics. He will be doing his A school in Great Lakes - he actually has two schools. I have never heard of that one before, but glad to know. I hear you about the pounding on doors.

@Ruth - Your daughter could have just text and that was it because as they are picked up at the airport they have to hand over the phones. So expect a call in about 3 weeks from what my son said and what the site has mentioned. You will get your box and letter and then you can follow her progress. I really have fallen in love with the information from this site. It is so helpful and keeps my mind from wondering what is going on as much. As a mom - I will always worry, but this puts my busy mind at rest some.

@storm- my son chose advanced hull tech.it sounds alot like a combo painter & Plummer with some other minor trade skills thrown in. He will also do an additional training school there in Chicago. Are you planning to attend boot camp graduation? I am planning to go.just need to figure out when it will be, hope that too is in the letter.

@Amy - My name is Heather (my usual log in was taken so made one up).... I am planning on going to the graduation. I heard rumor (just a possibility) that the graduation can be as soon as 12/16. They said that it is like bootcamp on steroids to get them to that date because they like to have the recruiters home for the holiday's if possible. Like I said - rumor, but that would be wonderful. We will get the graduation information in the kid in a box so they say. We will see. I think it depends on the first few weeks of bootcamp - will they graduate with their unit - will they have to repeat something?? That kind of thing. So hull tech? That will be lots of ship time, right? Is that what your son wanted? My son wanted something that only had some ship time and mostly land time.

Not so sure if he really focused on the factor of ship time, he was very focused and interested in the skilled trades aspect. He has always been a more tactile learner, and enjoys working with his hands.

They left her keep her cell phone long enought to call me and give me the brief run down.  I got the call Wenesday neght about 9:15.  It is very strange not being able to talk to her or know aht she is doing.

@Amy - that is good he is not looking at his choice of career in that aspect. My son did really well on his ASVAP testing and had all but one option open to him. He took days to figure out which two to narrow it down to so when he went to sign if one was taken the other might not be. He was going to look into the Seals, but was not 100% sold on it so he chose Advanced Electronics with Nuculer weapon options?? Something like that.

@Ruth - I am glad you got to hear from your daughter. That is the hardest. I went to suspend my son's service on his cell until the end of bootcamp and it broke my heart.

Well today is Jami's birthday.  It is very difficult having her gone for the first time and missing her first birthday.  My kid was signed up for aviation maitananceman and was susposed to leave in March, but went the apprenticship route to leave early when a spot opened up.  I really hope it works out for her.  I do not know alot about that option, but it sounds very up in the air.
