Hi there, I am feeling a bit stupid with all of the flight arrangements that I need to make.  We cannot afford to fly the family to graduation, so I think my husband will be going alone.  There is also the possibility that we will not be able to send my husband either.  Not an ideal situation, but unfortunately it is reality.  Is there transportation available through Great Lakes station to the airport for the graduate?  My son will have to figure it out if none of us are able to attend.  He already put in for leave after graduation and wants to come home for a few days before he ships to Charleston to "A" school.   If anyone has info how it all works, I am all ears!  Thanks!

Kathy, to help you, you need to say where your husband is coming from (ie what is the nearest airport near you). Southwest has awesome deals now, but if you're not in Southwest territory, then it won't work.

Make sure your son tells the Navy that he want to go home prior to reporting to Chaleston. He will have to pay the difference is what it cost to go home 1st, which usually isn't alot of money.... My son was in the Christmas unit in 2007, Dec 21st. Everything went perfect.
Craig, thank you for reply. We are east coast transplants on the west coast. We live in Danville, CA which is the East Bay San Francisco area. South West does cover the territory out here and to Midway airport in IL. I have contacted them and they do have some good deals right now going in and out of San Jose airport. It is good to know that I was on the right track by calling them directly. They were helpful and friendly (always a plus!). They do not fly to Charleston, yet. Southwest will be flying to Charleston by March 2011. So, I think my son told them he wanted to go home before leaving for school, but I will make sure.. I know he put in for leave. So, the navy will reimburse him what they would have paid to fly him from boot camp to "A" school, right? We or he would pay the difference to fly home and then to Charleston. My other big concern is transportation to the airport from the base if we cannot get to graduation (sad as that may be). Do you know if they have any kind of shuttle for the sailors? I like to have all bases covered, so I don't stress!
kathy, they will take him to the airport if he has is orders. As far as his leave, back in 2007, GL required copy of the airline tickets if you plan to book them yourself (proving that you have guaranteed ticket to his next duty station). However, all he has to do is tell the Sato transportation office that he wants to book his flight from GL to SJC to Charleston. They will book everything, then he will pay the difference. It's not much... Sato works really well with the sailors. My son fly thru our airport all the time without any costs to him. But yours is a little out of the way ~ha...

I would have your DH place a bid on Priceline for 12/16 to 12/18 from SJC to Chicago. The car rental is only $54 for the entire time.... Looks like the going price for the flight is $320 total, bid $240 total and see what happens...

To make sure Sato is doing the travel, call them and tell them your son is graduating from BC and will be on orders and wants to take leave enroute, then you'll know for sure...
Go here and call the Sato ticket office (3481)... http://www.mwrgl.com/gen_info/General_Base_Numbers.htm
Wow! Thank you so much. I will call the Sato number tomorrow. That would be the easiest way for him to get the tickets. I just need to get my husband booked. Southwest does have some good deals at the moment and yes, if we do book the flight for my son, we have to provide copies of the tickets. You have been very helpful. It would be better, I would think, for my son to book the flight himself. The whole Navy experience has been a learning experience for all of us, not just my son. I will let you know how it ends up. I hope your son is doing well and is safe. Boot camp has and still is out of my son's comfort zone, but that is what it is all about, moving on and growing up. If all goes as planned, he will be a "Nuke" guy after A school. Thank you again. You have been extremely helpful!
kathy - Yes, GL required to see my sons tickets, but that was the rule then. It might not be the same rule now. Bottomline, let Sato do the work. They know when the bus leaves that bring the sailors to the airport, then know how to make the connecting flights. If anything does get wacked out, it's on them (Sato) to straighten it out. Your son is just too fresh in the military to try to save the $$$, let the professionals do it....Thats their job....
You really, really need to join one f the PIR groups whose sailors are going directly on leave out of boot camp. They have been getting a lot of information from the Public Affairs office.

Sato is NOT handling the travel for those taking leave for the stand down, Craig. The PAO (public affairs office) is saying, submit an itinerary, pay for your own tickets, and then file the travel claim at A school. They have to sign up for the shuttle. Some are flying out of Midway rather than O'hare. The group leader, Betsy, has been on the phone to them often, keeping the PIR group informed. The 12/22 group has similar information.

I was pretty shocked at the completely different way it is being handled.
Kathy,
Join this local San Fran group. Many have traveled from the West Coast to GL. Under the group heading, "PIR Tips" is a consolidation of various information the group has gathered. Patricia from San Carlos left you a message on your comment wall. Click on MY PAGE (from above menu bar) and scroll down. I left you a message too. Below is the link to the SF Bay Area group - there are a number of members who live in the East Bay. In Fact chew92 has a son who just left for BC. After you join the group, post a message, introduce yourself and let other know what info you need. See you later.

Just click on the above link and click JOIN. BTW, the SF group has met at least 10 times. 27 of us gathered for dinner during Fleet Week at the Marines' Memorial Hotel in San Fran. Too bad you missed that.
I totally agree with Anti M.

Yes, check to see how the others in his division is doing things, and follow the advice on the PIR group here on N4M.... My bad for not suggesting that 1st....(Thanks Anti M for keeping me straight).....
It is a pretty unusual situation, and the reason I joined a PIR group at all, just to find out how the holiday stand down affects the new graduates. Used to be they wouldn't let them go on leave until they cleared their liberty phases. No wonder you didn't think of it, I sure didn't at first.
So, my son has put in for Christmas leave which starts immediately after graduation on Dec 17th at 1200 and ends December 28 (we will get him there by the 26th) when he starts A school in Charleston, SC (Nuke school). I found a flight on Southwest Airlines that flies out of Midway and flies into San Jose, CA. It is a reusable ticket, not a refundable. I cannot afford the refundable ticket, but the reuseable ticket should work even if he has to change the date (if graduation date changes). I was just able to borrow some money from my sister to get my husband to Great Lakes for Graduation which will be the next ticket I need to purchase along with my son's ticket from San Jose to Charleston. So, he will be able to get my son to the airport. Now, if for some reason my husband does not go to graduation, there is a shuttle to the airport from the base to the Midway? It sounded like there was. You mentioned that Betsy, the group leader, was keeping PIR group informed. Is there someone I can contact to be sure I am doing things correctly? I am a little overwhelmed with the website at the moment. I know I will get the hang of it in time. I am just worried about getting the tickets squared away before it is too late because of the holiday rush. I apologize if there is someone else I should ask about this. Thank you!
Kathy, I did a multiple city search on Cheap Tickets. Here is what I have found.
Search for Departure from Chicago MDW to SFO on Dec 17 afternoon, then from SFO to CHS (Charleston, SC) on Dec 26 - there are available flights from $448 to $518 (with multiple carriers).
Often, I have my sons fly out late in the evening arriving in the East Coast the next morning. Have you son find out who is going to be there on the 27th of DEC, someone may be able to pick him up in the morning of the 27th (rather than 11:30 PM on the 26th).

http://www.cheaptickets.com/App/ViewFlightSearchResults?retrievePar...

Don't know if the link can be saved. You may have to start the search again. You can try Expediate as well.
Usually the Navy won't let newly graduated sailors take civilian transportation to the airport. They run a bus that takes all departing sailors to the airport, they run two or three buses each day to each airport (O'Hare and Midway). So your husband probably won't be allowed to drive him to the airport.

He can meet him at the airport, though.
