May seem trivial to some - but important to us. Can my son bring his retainers to BC or will they issue him another set?  He only wears them two or three nights a week - but 8-9 weeks is a very long time for teeth. They "move" very quickly if the device doesn't have a chance to keep them aligned. I hate to see all that money go down the drain from paying for two sets of braces. Is a waiver necessary and/or required? I've called his recruiter, but recruiter says he's never really heard the question before. ANY help is really appreciated. I am hoping they don't come home in "the box." Thanks so much!

Yes, if he has declared that he has retainers, then he can take them to BC and keep them. See the info on that in the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Sailor Leaves for the RTC. Be sure he mentions them at MEPS to be sure they are documented and remind him to put them in his "Valuables Sock" before he packs "the box" at the RTC. Some put them in "the box" when they hear "Everything in the box" so he needs to know to put them in his "Valuables Sock" instead.

If your future Sailor wears a retainer (permanent or removable), s/he will be able to keep it at the RTC as long as it was declared in the paperwork; a waiver may be required for some ratings. Recruiters sometimes tell future Sailors to remove them, but your future Sailor should respectfully refuse and ask that the retainer be documented.

My daughters recruiter didn't seem to know the answer to this question either.  He suggested her wearing them TO BC (upon arrival).  She only wears them at night, but she wears them every night.  We did get a note from her orthodontist and she taped the note inside her address book so it wasn't thrown away.  I got "the box" last Friday and her retainers were not in it, so I'm guessing that worked for her...(her retainers also were not mentioned anywhere in her paperwork). Good luck!! : )

:o)

JUST FYI - The retainers DID NOT come home in "the box." Still haven't spoken with him. But he was allowed to keep them. Thank you!

Great!
