I can hardly wait until we can have regular communication again. That's been the hardest thing for me. We are very close and not being able to talk to him has been just awful. Major son time withdrawals! We head out to GL 2 weeks from tomorrow!!!!
keke, you will like when he goes to A school. They call all the time. He starts his A school classes tomorrow. Certain hours they even get to wear civilian clothing. He was really happy about that when we spoke earlier today. He is really looking forward to his classes starting.
Hi Ladies, my son will graduate on 9/17/10 and is then moving to A -School for EM. Can you let me know how it went for your sailors so far? They told us, that the program is 15 weeks long, but I do hear now it might be shorter?
Hi Sailor Mom, My son moved over to A school from bc on 7/14 and started his A school the following week. They had enough sailors to start a class (25). Besides the class he is currently taking he has others that he said would probably take him into Jan. 2011. If this is the case he will probably get leave around the holidays for about 2 weeks.

Good luck to your son and I am sure you are looking forward to his PIR. We had an awesome time PIR weekend with our sailor and the ceramony was spectacular. My husband and I were extemely impressed.
AseanEMmom - was your son a grad & go? I just learned, that you can be grad & go even when you stay at GL. Are the fellow students in your son's room all classmates?
No he was not a G&G. PIR was 7/9 and he moved over to A school on 7/14 and started his class on 7/23. His room mates are all going to school for other jobs like machinist, engineman and the other one escapes me right now. My son said they sometines purposely mix them up. One sailor that he went through bc with is an EM like him and he is in another room but same ship.
My son had a test today and received a 98 and now he gets one duty day off for getting 3 90's in a row. His friend that usually studies with him received an 82 because he did not want to give up his Sunday liberty and the friend that did study with him yesterday got a 93. They were both very happy to get the highest grades. I am so proud of him for taking the time to study. He had to call me at work to tell me about his grade this afternoon.
thank you for responding to my questions, it helps a lot to get a little up front information. Glad to hear, that your son made good grades, We always feel better when we see good performance. We just received a letter from boot camp and can imagine how glad they all must be when it is over. I am sure my son looks forward to A -school.
Yes they can't wait to step foot off that base after PIR. My son was like come on lets go. We were the first family off base. My son was never a book worm and I think he has studied more in bc & A school then he did when he was in HS & college. I recently asked him why and he told me because this is what he really wants to do and likes it. Our son is very happy with being in the navy.
yes, if something catches their interest all of a sudden they can study. Our son finds bc exciting and interesting and said the classroom work is not very difficult. So I hope that it will continue when he moves to A school. I am glad your son does well, that is all we want as parents.
this is more a logistic question. Do we have to send them towels, bed sheets, etc. like you would if they would be in a college or does the Navy provide that for them and they just have to do the laundry?
The Navy provides plain sheets, pillowcases and (itchy) blankets. Some of the barracks allow them to use personal bedding, but in A school, many do not. He will have to ask. I know some have been sent handmade quilts and then have to put them in their lockers when not using them. I had my own bedding in C school, had to use issue when I was in A school.

Towels: they are probably using the towels they were issued/bought in bootcamp. They have their names stenciled on them. While they can use regular towels, a lot prefer to stick with the plain white ones. That way they can keep using them once they get to a real ship in the fleet.
