How many of you plan  on or have gone to graduation? It is a long distance for us , my husband has not flown since he was a teenager  and I'm not sure I could get him on a plane anyway!  We are from a small town  so  city traffic seems intimidating to me though my husband is a truck driver. (He HATES traffic, too)  Our son doesn't go to boot camp until Feb 23 ( his 21st birthday!) but I am trying to work this whole thing out in my head. I have look at airfare/hotel/car pkgs and about choked!

We didn't go to our son's PIR either. It was just too far and we didn't have the money. His GF is from Wisconsin so she took a trip home and she and her mom went, so he did have someone there. You should go if possible but if it's not, don't feel guilty, make sure he orders the DVD so you can watch it a hundred times over.
you could always Amtrak into Chicago or take a bus.
I second taking Amtrak. It is far, far more comfortable than taking the bus (flying too). I love taking the train.

Hi, My son graduates 2/18/11. We live in NY and can't decide to drive or fly. There are 4 of us going. It is expensive, but I don't want to miss it. Any good suggestions??

My grandson graduates in March.  Four of us are going, and we saved a lot of money using the Navy brochure sent to my Daughter in law with the form letter.  There are many motels around the base that give huge Navy discounts, and we booked one of those which is 3 miles from the base.  We also booked Southwest and got great deals since we booked early.  We will rent a car, and use the navy discount for that also.  Hope this helps
drive, fly or take the train.  If you fly or take the train, you need a rental car.  Just do what you can to get there!!  :)  I am still paying for my trip too and it was a year ago but it will be the best money I ever spent!  Who cares how long it took to pay it off!  I used a coupon out of a friends Entertainment Book and saved $70 on the rental from National.  I rented a minivan so no matter how many of us there were, we were set.  Went online and looked up online deals and found a minivan on special and used the coupon.  I also only signed up for one driver, me, and let my Husband sit so we saved money on that bec you pay for each driver.  Didn't take the ins bec my ins  paid for the rental. I found every way to save.  Go online to book a hotel and use AARP as your coupon discount...lol.  Im not old enough yet but they give you a great rate. Ate at fun places, not necessarily the top of the line.  Went to a sports bar and sat around watching sports and eating.  The bar is close. Just ask!  Good luck and go, go, go!!!
I find this very overwhelming.   I am from NY and plan to fly. It is very expensive but...not sure about driving either. Don't do well in traffic esp. in a unfamiliar place.
If you can fly Southwest Air and buy early enough they are VERY reasonable but still a big chunk if you have ore thatn one going, then add hotel, car, etc...stiil trying to figure it out but I have plenty of time since he hasn't even left yet!

Well I am down to only 2 of us going. Me and my youngest son. Ex-husband is not allowed!!!!! LOL

I will book on Southwest! Hope for the best. Where is your son?  Please keep in touch, and thanks

Southwest has sales on till Thurs

$106 from NY La Guardia to Chicago MDW

$111 from Chicago MDW to La Guardia

Both are nonstops flights too, 2 hours

That's how we went. You can rent a car right in the airport.  Borrow someone's GPS and it's a straight shot to Great Lakes!  About 1 hour 15 min, if I remember correctly.  You definitely need a car.  There is lots of time to get your best deals and don't forget the paperwork you got from your recruit in the mail.  It has the paperwork to register your vehicle for a pass.  You need the pass to get on the base.  Read every page they sent you.  You will be glad you did.  Lots of information.  I said above I used coupons and codes for the car and the hotels.  Ask your friends, they will be able to help you book for cheaper!  Good luck!

We are flying into Midway, we have a reservation for a car.  How is the drive from Midway to our hotel which is in Waukegan, ILL 3 miles from base?  It looks like it will be a lot of traffic...I hope not...anyone did this route and can reassure me?/
