The recruiter told my son that since he is leaving for boot camp on November 6th, he would be home in time for Christmas because they "cram" all the time in so recruits could go home.  I'm assuming the recruiter wasn't telling the truth and that he will not complete boot camp until January.  Can someone give me an honest answer?  I just want to prepare myself.  Thanks!

To guesstimate the PIR date, count 9 Fridays after your Future Sailor is to arrive at the RTC (4 January 2013) and then realize it could be the week before (28 December 2012) if he is one of the last to fill his division (possible for those arriving at the beginning of the week as your Future Sailor will) or the week after (11 January 2013) if the RTC skips a week and does not have PIR one week, which happens some at this time of year.  The good news is that he may be in one of the divisions that will be in the Christmas Adopt-A-Sailor program and get to leave the RTC for Christmas.  The only way to know the PIR date for certain is to get the form letter with the date (and then double-check that against http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/upcoming_grads.asp since some form letters had the wrong date for the Thanksgiving TG).

I agree with lemon.

My guess is If he arrived the week of the 29th of October, then he would be in the Christmas TG and would be allowed to come home.  Nov 6th is just too late to be in that TG.

I'd ask the recruiter if he could be sent to bootcamp one week early, then he will be able to come home (ie Oct 29th or 30th)

Craig, I think the Christmas TG is the one that would have PIR 12/21/2012 and in that case the recruits for it would arrive the week of 10/22/2012 to as late as 10/30/2012, but some who arrive on the 22nd and 23rd could be in the TG with PIR on 12/14/2012 and some arriving on the 29th or 30th could be in the 12/28/2012 TG.  That's saying that there is a TG each week, which might not happen.

I've been better at predicting dates for those arriving Wednesday-Friday because you never know when a Monday or Tuesday arrival will be one of the last in the division that started the week before in the previous TG.

There are also usually 2 weeks in the Christmas stand down at the "A" Schools, so it could be that those with PIR on 12/21/2012 and 12/28/2012 would go home for a time.   Again, we'll have to see which weeks, if any, get skipped and don't have PIR.

Lemon - This year it's kind of weird on how the days align.  Usually if you arrive the ~27 Oct, then you would be in the Christmas unit. however, since the 27th is on a weekend this year it messes everything up.  This is one of those time that will be interesting to find the answer.

The school houses (A school) will be closed during this time, so I'd see no reason why these sailors wouldn't be able to come home.

One thing for sure, I don't think Nov 6th with get to come home.  You agree?

I agree; anyone arriving on 6 Nov. will be at the RTC for Christmas and, like I said, MAY be part of the Christmas Adopt-A-Sailor program.

Sending someone to bootcamp early requires a DAR

Lets get something out of the way, anytime something starts with "the recruiter told...." just guess it is wrong!  They have out dated info and don't take the time to call RTC's PAO to ask to see what is going on and get the up to date info.

Prepare yourself for your recruit not to be home.  Even if they are one of the divisions who are allowed the day of Christmas with the family (while they are still in bootcamp) can yuo really afford to go up over Christmas and than again for PIR (which would be the week following?  Or even spend that much time up in Great Lakes in a hotel?

IF the recruit does PIR, right before Christmas, they will be allowed to take leave, to go home for a few days (the only PIR group that is allowed to go home after PIR) BUT they will be required to pay for their ticket home and to their "A" School.  PLUS that leave is counted against them, and if they have a short "A" School, they won't get leave again after "A" School.

So reality is there are too many, maybe's and could be's with this question...you won't know any of this answers until the recruit starts bootcamp and you get a forum letter.
