Hi everyone. My mother-in-law and myself will be attending my husband's graduation on April 30th, and we're not checking into a hotel because we live in indiana.. so about 2 and half hours from Great Lakes. During his graduation, we're just going to go by ourselves, then come home that night.. and come back to Great Lakes to visit him and bring my kids so he can see his babies!

So I was wondering, is there a place besides restaurants that we can just sit and talk?

Where did you all sit and visit with your Sailor at?

thanks! :)

sshhh - don't tell anyone - but I bet you could just sit in the lobby of some hotel. How would they know if you were a guest or not? To be honest - just don't drink the complimentary coffee most of them have sitting out.

Not bringing the kids to PIR???
Hahaha thank you! And nope! We have a 19 month old daughter and a 7 month old son. I'm not sure how they'll behave during the ceremony so we're just playing it safe haha
Yea, after I wrote that I went to your page to see if you said how old they were - and I completely agree with you!! Especially if he will get to see them the next day!
OHHH yeah! My 7 month old would be okay but then again I don't really want them around the loudness and everything! So either way, it all works out and everyone can be happy. :)
I heard there is a mall near by! (I am taking my 19 month old with me! for everything, he will get a kick out of it and hopefully not cry..)
Yeah, good luck with all that. Hahaha.. are you taking him in a stroller? I'm sure my daughter could behave if she was strapped in a stroller but she just looooves adventuring.. even in front of people she doesn't know.. and makes a fool out of me when I constantly chase her and she's screaming and crying.. gotta love parenthood. ... and toddlers. :) '

And I heard about the mall! Yay!! Except my husband hates shopping.. boooo. *sigh*...men.. ha.
The mall is called Gurnee Mills - it is about 20 - 30 minutes away.
He freaks out in a stroller but we are bringing it anyhow.. He also has a harness I use for him. He acts really well with it.. Knows when to stop and doesn't run off. It looks like a little monkey backpack and I hold the tail. When I worked at Disneyland, he was there all the time so we had to do something to keep him near by. Shouldn't be too big of a battle.

I just want to hang out in the hotel room with my husband so Alex can run around safely and I can have somewhat of peace and quiet!
Actually we did drive on the A school base when our son PIR'ed 3/19, several times. We had our parking pass( keep this for use all weekend long) and our Sailor had his ID. We drove over to the "other" NEX and in general drove around to site see. No questions were asked. One trip in my husband who is a civilian Navy employee showed his DOD id, same as your Sailors and that was enough. I think that their intent is to not have everyone show up there. Gurnee Mills mall might be on okay spot, we did not go there but lots of Sailors and their families do.
Hi Stephanie,
Are son is graduation onn May 14. I understand that he will have Friday and Saturday off, . .but have to be back to barracks by 8:00pm each night. Will he have Sunday off too?
thanks, Brenda
Usually they get Sunday off too, he may have duty or watch but they are well briefed on their schedule.
We really enjoyed Gurnee Mills Mall, there were things to do and see while you sit or talk, including places to eat (the Rainforest Cafe is fun but pricey).

We also went to another mall, the Woodfield Mall, which is a bit farther away (Schaumberg) but isn't crawling with freshly graduated sailors and A-school students, so it's a lot more relaxed. They had a Starbucks with open seating there, I sat there with my sons for a few hours.
