Oh, Jackie, we were the only family to go to our daughter's DEP meetings. There were 35 DEPPERs and we were always the only parents (and 1 little sister) there at the meetings supporting my daughter. The recruiters appreciated us showing our support and we felt very welcomed!!. We also drove our daughter down to the San Diego hotel, brought her to MEPs for a quick processing with her recruiter, so she didn't have to spend hours there by herself, had dinner with her at the hotel (she didn't like what was available on the dinner voucher, so she ordered a salad and we paid for our own dinners), then we stayed with her until 9:40 pm, walked her to the elevator. If we knew about being able to book our own room to meet her at MEPS for her swearing in the next morning, we would have done that too. As it is, we left her that night and drove back up to our home, sniffling and crying all the way (2 hours). You have time to plan the time with your daughter that night when she is at the hotel. Our daughter wrote a note to us that night after we left and she tucked that note into her jeans pocket where we found it when we got her clothes, cell phone, and shoes, and backpack back in The Box. She had brought a backpack with her and had put her cell phone in one of its compartments. Her backpack had one change of clothes in it for the hotel. She used the hotel shampoo, conditioner, and lotion and ask for a tooth brush & tooth paste provided by the hotel.
Sorry this is so long, but it just came pouring out, living it again. Daina is at A school in Pensacola now studying Information Technician (IT). Her PIR was March 8th and she will be done in Pensacola in August when we will be able to see her again on leave!! Miss her so much and proud of her decision to make her own life with the Navy!! You will be proud too and know that your daughter made the right choice to be trained and get paid at the same time. She has an awesome opportunity to see the world too!! (((HUGS)))
Hi Jackie,
I meant to respond to you earlier, but you know how time gets away. Yep, totally understandable that we would be more concerned about our babies going away. They are looking forward to it because they have chosen their own path! Of course, they are nervous about the unknown, but it really isn't unknown because the Navy has done alot of things to prepare our future sailors! Hopefully she has a awesome recruiter who she checks in with weekly, then there are the monthly DEP meetings where they check up if they are studying their START guides seeing if they know the 11 General Orders, Sailor's Creed, Navy Maxim, the Chain of Command, the rates of the different Navy levels (E-1, E-2, all the way to the commissioned officers and the insignias that each wears, the aircraft and the ships. They need to know the stuff on the DEP test in Boot Camp AND pass their PFA in order to rank up to E-2 or E-3. My daughter made a copy of the START guide for me, which I put into a 3 ring binder then I worked with her on quizzing the stuff.
There are the Navy videos up on the Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) group in the "Arrival and What Happens at RTC" section under the members' pictures. And Youtube has alot of different videos where people have shared their Boot Camp experiences. I like the ones done by a female PlasmaSpeedo. She gives alot of detail and has a cute personality. I know I just gave you alot of info, but the more you and your daughter know, the calmer you'll both be~~
You should consider being added to her bank account to be able to handle any banking for her if she has her own account already and so you can pay any bills on her behalf while she is at Boot Camp. Think about a Medical Power of Attorney just in case she is injured during Boot Camp. Your local hospital can give you a form for free specifically designed for your state. I'm not trying to scare you, just trying to help you be prepared for anything. The Power of Attorney will need to be notarized. There are 2 kinds; general (financial) and medical.
i was wrong earlier...my daughter is a AM...what is it like for females in that rate?
imomxfour,
She won't really need a wallet. They can't carry things in their pockets anyway. Once she gets a chance to go to the nex or a uniform shop they can get a little pouch that attaches around their ankle to carry cash and such. For bootcamp they just carry their ID and bank card in their uniform top pocket if going to the nex. I got my daughter a little address book that closed with a rubber band and she took that with her license, bank card, a little cash, and a deposit slip. She had all the important addresses and phone numbers in there and we printed a couple pictures out on regular paper (made them small) and glued them into the address book. Until she could start getting mail she had a few pictures to look at.
Question - what kind of wallet did your daughters take to BC? We're heading out now to get the last minute things done before our oldest, and only daughter leaves on Sunday!!! eek!!
Just have to get POA, add my name to her bank account, and get a little address book - and a wallet, I guess!!!!
paigesmom, I see!! Well enjoy this time, it will go fast! When our son had 5-6 months, we thought it was a long time, and it was over before we knew it. (((HUGS)))
